Ballymoney Nursery School

June Newsletter

June has arrived and hopefully with it we’ll start to enjoy some summer weather! It is so hard to believe the children are in their final month at Nursery School and are due to transfer to the next stage of their educational journey. Before they leave us however, we’ve got a few treats in store including a visit from The Ulster Orchestra’s Big Bad Bass and a Teddy Bears’ Picnic, weather permitting.

We’ll be involving the children in setting up a travel agency as we explore the themes of the seaside and holidays. We’re also celebrating “People from Other Lands” and once again we’d really appreciate any contributions you may be able to make to any of the classroom displays/interest areas.

This month’s interest area will feature:

Travel agents/Foreign Foods/People from other lands

Any contributions for our displays would be very welcome.

The Seaside/Holidays

Linking with “The Seaside” theme we’ll be talking about the different types

of fish. You could look at some pictures of fish and see how many your child

recognises.

As we explore the theme of holidays you could share your experiences of visiting

the seaside when you were younger, and perhaps share some photographs.

The Travel Agency

The children will be involved in setting up a Travel Agent’s shop

in the classroom and they will be acting out choosing and booking

a trip abroad. Try to visit a travel agent and discuss what goes on

in the shop.

Perhaps you could look at the brochures together, talking about where the countries are,

and sharing with them any holidays or journeys at home or abroad that you

remember well or indeed a holiday you may be planning for the summer.

Remember! We’d really appreciate any resources you might be able to

contribute.

June Snack Menu

In addition to offering a varied selection of summer fruits we’ll be

encouraging the children to sample foods from other countries in keeping

with our theme “People from other Lands”.

Information

·  Thank you to everyone who has been donating items to our recycling bank to support us with our recycling initiative. Over this year we’ve managed to raise £50. We are very grateful for any donations so please continue to spread the word to friends and family who may be doing a clear out before the summer gets under way.

·  The final library session will take place on Wednesday 5th June. We would ask that the little red bags be returned to the school on Monday 10th June so that they can be prepared for use again in September.

·  In order to ease the transition for your child transferring to their new primary school in September we have invited the local Primary 1 teachers to visit the Nursery School and share some time with their prospective pupils.

·  The Transition Profiles/End of Year Reports will be distributed mid June. You will receive the original copy which must be signed and returned to the school as soon as possible so that it can be passed on to the Primary School. You will receive a photocopy of the report in your child’s school profile which will be sent home at the end of June. Also included with your child’s profile will be a CD Rom of photographs taken over the year in Nursery School. If you wish to discuss any aspect of the report please speak to the class teacher to arrange an appointment.

·  On Friday 14th June we’re inviting all children in the Nursery to wear their favourite hat and sunglasses to school for the day to celebrate the Northern Ireland Cancer Fund for Children’s Hats and Shades Day. Participating in Hats and Shades Day is a great way to increase the children’s awareness of the importance of taking care in the sun whilst raising vital funds to support local children diagnosed with cancer and their families. We ask for a donation of £1 per child.

·  Monkeynastix sessions will finish on Thursday 20th June.

·  On Friday 21st June the Ulster Orchestra’s double bass trio will be presenting an hour of fun with “Big Bad Bass at the Beach” for all classes.

·  Copies of the Board of Governors Annual General Report to parents will be available the week beginning Monday 24th June. Please contact the school if you wish to obtain a copy.

·  Hopefully, weather permitting, we’ll be going on a “Teddy Bears Picnic” sometime during the week beginning Monday 24th June. We’ll keep you informed.

·  The summer term will end for the afternoon classes at 2.45pm on Thursday 27th June and for the morning classes at 11.30a.m. on Friday 28th June.

·  If you are planning a holiday in June and will not be back by the end of term, please let us know in advance so that we can give you your child’s report and profile before you leave.

·  We would once again like to thank those of you who have paid the School Fund for this term. However according to the records kept in school a significant number of contributions remain outstanding. Many of our visiting entertainers such as the up and coming group from the Ulster Orchestra costing £300, are funded in this way, as is the daily snack. Subsequently, as we are nearing the end of the school year, you may be approached for your contribution.

·  We’d like to thank you all for your support and enthusiasm over the year and take this opportunity to wish you and your child every happiness and success as they transfer to their new schools in September.

Finally

Over the page we have included a selection of rhymes and songs associated with this month’s themes which we will be teaching the children.
