Laptop/ Flexible Working Checklist

This checklist is designed to be used in conjunction with the Evolve on-line training course “Display Screen Equipment Assessment” but can be used on its own by school staff.

Working at a Desk

Check that your docking station/ laptop stand is in good working order.
If using a stand check that the monitor, keyboard and mouse are correctly connected to your laptop.
Adjust the height of the monitor so the top of the screen is in your eye line.
Angle the keyboard if required and position your mouse as close to the end as possible.

Chair

Familiarise yourself with the adjusters on your chair. Check that none are loose or broken.
Adjust your chair to a comfortable working height. You should be able to sit with a 90 degree angle at your hip and at your knee.
N.B. If you are unable to get your feet flat on the floor you will need to use the foot rest.
Adjust the height of your back rest in order to provide lower back and shoulder support.
If you have arm rests on your chair adjust to a comfortable working height. Ideally you should be able to put your arms on the rests and on your desk with a comfortable 90 degree angle at your elbows.

Carry Case/ Equipment

Check that your laptop carry case is in good working order. Check for damage to the:
i.  Straps
ii.  Fastener/ zip
iii.  Wheels (where applicable)
Consider the amount of equipment you are required to carry; would you benefit from using an alternative style of carrier?

Working out & about

Action / Completed ü/û
Consider the documentation you are taking with you; could any of it be carried electronically, for instance using a memory stick?
If you are using your laptop to read a document or form etc, position it on a higher level in order to avoid stooping or bending to see the screen.
If you are typing into a form or document set the laptop up on a surface where you can type with a 90 degree angle at your elbow.
If you will be using your laptop for more than a couple of hours dock into a proper work station.
