DOROTHY STRINGER HIGH SCHOOL

The RELIGIOUS STUDIES DEPARTMENT

Head of Department: Mrs A Jones BA (Hons), PGCE

This well-established and highly respected Department consists of seven full-time teachers.

The appointment would be suitable for a N.Q.T.

The subject is taught in discrete lessons in the Lower School [Years 7-9] for 3 hours a fortnight on a two-week [50-hour per fortnight] timetable. In the Upper School [Years 10-11] the subject is taught in discrete lessons for 2 hours a fortnight in Year 10 and 3 hours a fortnight for Year 11.

The School follows the Brighton & Hove Agreed Syllabus which was introduced in September, 1999.

The main themes in the Lower School are:

Year 7 The Religion of Early Humanity, including creation myths - The Nature and Structure of the Bible - The Patriarchs and the Prophets of Israel - Hinduism

Year 8 Rites of Passage – Festivals - The Life of Jesus – The Life of Martin Luther King - Places of Worship

Year 9 The Nature of Religion – Prayer and Worship - The Nature of Humanity and the Nature of God -Ethical Problems – Citizenship - Buddhism

In the Upper School all pupils follow the GCSE Edexcel Syllabus 8, studying Christianity and Islam. This syllabus, which covers most of the requirements for ‘Citizenship’, was introduced in September, 2001.

The Department has recently taken on the formal responsibility for the delivery of ‘Citizenship’ at Key stages 3 and 4. This includes Assessment and Reporting at Key Stage 3.

In addition a number of pupils at Key Stage 4, as a part of the Option Scheme, are doing GCE AS Religious Studies in ‘Philosophy of Religion’ and ‘Ethics’. The Department was the first in the country to offer this examination at Key Stage 4.

The Department is very well-equipped indeed with its own Resource Room and stock room: and has five specialist rooms that are adjacent to each other. Each room is equipped with a data projector and DVD/Video player.

The philosophy of the Department is expressed in the name of the subject. The Department aims to encourage all pupils to study the phenomenon of religion using examples both from the past and the present. While the majority of examples are taken from Christianity the pupils also learn of the expression of faith through Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism, as well as early religion.

The Department has a reputation for excellence. The successful candidate would be expected to maintain the high standards that the pupils and parents have come to expect.
