DR. PEDRO E. GARCIA

Dr. Pedro E. Garcia is a professor of Clinical Education at the Rossier School of Education at the University of Southern California. He has a Thematic Dissertation Group and serves on more than 60 dissertation committees. Dr. Garcia also serves on the k-12 Ed Governance Committee and the university Academic Leadership Development Committee. Prior to coming to USC in 2008, Dr. Garcia served as superintendent of schools for 17 years. His last appointment was in Nashville, Tennessee from 2001-2008. He was the third longest tenured superintendent among urban districts in America. Metro Nashville Public Schools is the 42nd largest district in the country with over 79,000 students and a budget of over $777 million dollars. Dr. Garcia also served as Superintendent of the Corona-Norco Unified School District, (1994-2001) and superintendent of Carpinteria USD from 1991-1994.

Dr. Pedro E. Garcia, Cuban born American, arrived in the USA in 1962 at the age of 15. He was part of Operation Peter Pan, which brought 14,048 children to freedom from communism. He lived in a Miami camp for refugees until his parents arrived months later. In 1963, the family moved to Iowa, where he learned English and graduated from high school. He earned his B.A. degree from Kansas University; his master's degree is from San Diego State University and his doctorate degree from The University of Southern California in 1983.

In 1970, Dr. Garcia was employed by Campus Crusade for Christ International at UCLA. He began his teaching career in 1971 in San Diego County. Dr. Garcia became the youngest high school principal in Los Angeles County in 1978 at the age of 31.

.Dr. Garcia has served on numerous boards. In 2003, President Bush appointed him to the Presidential Commission on Service and Community Participation. Dr. Garcia has worked with numerous community organizations to improve schools. In 2002 he created an office for community engagement. In 2005, he opened the first Customer Service Center to help parents navigate the educational system.

Dr. Garcia was honored as Nashvillian of the year in 2002. Twice he has been a finalist for National Superintendent of the year. In 2007, The Franklin Covey Corporation recognized him with their National Leadership Award. He also received the Apollo Award fromf the Public Relations Society of America. He has received four “Who's Who” nominations and the Outstanding Young Man of America Award. He was selected by the California School Library Association to receive their annual Administrative Leadership Award in 1996.

Dr. Garcia has conducted seminars for business executives on how to become a highly functioning learning organization, on transformational leadership, leading change, team building, creating an organizational vision, and creating a culturally competent organization.

He completed the L.A. Marathon in 1996. He and his wife, Dr. Priscilla L. Partridge de Garcia, have five grown children and twelve grandchildren. Priscilla received all three degrees from the University of Southern California and was selected Helen of Troy her senior year.
