DESIGN YOUR RACECAR (PINE CAR) PROJECT RUBRIC

Scoring Level
(10 points) / Scoring Level
(8 points) / Scoring Level
(6 points) / Scoring Level
(4 points) / Scoring Level
(2 point) / Total
1. Race Car Construction (wheels and axle, fin specification and finishing details: paints and decals) / Neat construction and assembly. Excellent attention to finishing detail (additional painting and design). / Good construction and assembly according to procedure and good attention to finishing detail. / Car holds together and followed assembly procedure and requirements, but no attention to finishing detail was emphasized. / Poor construction and assembly. Little attention given to requirements and assembly procedure. / Construction appears careless or haphazard. Many details need refinement for a strong or reliable outcome.
2. Design Enhancement (weights and holders, blocks and other refinements to speed up the model race car) / Unique theme and original design. Excellent level of creativity. Appropriate materials and design were selected and creatively modified ways that made design even better. / Interesting theme. Good level of creativity. Appropriate materials were selected and there was an attempt at creative modification to make design better. / Basic theme. Basic level of creativity. Some materials were used that showed small improvements to performance. / Minimal creativity. inapt planning and inappropriate materials/design were selected and contributed to a product that performed poorly. / No design enhancement was added to model race car/followed only the assembly procedure.
3. Performance
on Ramp/Fin Detection
/ Travels the ramp without problem and fin can be detected by photo-eye sensor. / Travels the whole length of the ramp and passed the minimum test, however fin has problem being detected by photo-eye sensor. / Travels the whole length of the ramp but cannot sustain a minimum of three runs. / Wheels fit the slots but fell the ramp or snaps during travel. / Wheels cannot fit slots or snaps.
4. Power Point Presentation of Physics Concepts behind the Race Car Project / Power Point presentation contains complete project information with detailed graphics. Demonstrates excellent conceptual understanding of the physics principles for the race car design project. / Power Point presentation contains complete project information with detailed graphics. Demonstrates good conceptual understanding of the physics principles race car design project. / Power Point presentation contains complete project information with detailed graphic or pictures. Demonstrates minimal understanding of physics principles for the race car design project. / Power Point presentation has minimal project information and graphics. Demonstrates poor conceptual understanding of the physics principles for the race car design project
/ Power Point presentation poorly organized project steps not clear on how project was done, no graphics nor pictures included and no inclusion of physics concepts.
5. Bonus to be observed during the Measurement
Experiment / Demonstrates excellent conceptual understanding of physics principles in conducting an excellent, meaningful investigation of car. / Demonstrates good conceptual understanding of physics principles in conducting a good investigation of car. / Demonstrates minimal understanding of physics principles and conducts a basic investigation of car. / Demonstrates poor conceptual understanding or does not fully apply this understanding in conducting a meaningful investigation of car / No conceptual understanding or does not fully apply this understanding in conducting a meaningful investigation of car. No preparation or prior study.
