Ajay, Surender, Virender, Dinesh and Pushpender under the supervision of ACP/Sh. K.P.S. Malhotra and overall supervision of DCP/Sh. Bhisham Singh has apprehended a gang that committed theft of hard disk from the set top boxes of Tata Sky, DTH installed in the houses of various customers of Tata Sky, DTH. Two persons have been apprehended. They had removed 77 hard disk from 54 houses.

Complaints had been received by various police stations in Delhi regarding theft of hard disk of Tata Sky, DTH by persons impersonating as Tata Sky employees. On 26.07.14, on specific information, 2 persons were apprehended. They were identified as Shanky Gupta (aged 26 years) r/o Bhrahampuri, Delhi and Rajiv Gupta (aged 22 years) r/o Karawal Nagar, Delhi. They were arrested under the appropriate section of the law.

The arrested persons were subjected to sustained interrogation. It was revealed that Tata Sky had outsourced the entire installation work and had engaged installation service providers area wise. These installation service providers had not only access to the data base of TATA Sky but they employed their own work force for the purpose of installation.

Shanky Gupta and Rajiv Gupta on interrogation disclosed that they worked for the installation service providers covering the trans yamuna area. They stated that once they had been assigned the job of replacing a defective set top box with a new set top box. After replacing the new set top box with the old one, they opened the old set top box and found a hard disk in it. They removed the hard disk and deposited the old set top box with the installation service provider. They sold the hard disk at Rs. 1750/-. They found an easy way to earn quick money and decided to remove hard disks from the set top boxes, from the houses of customers where they were installed as they had free entry to these premises being employees of the installation service providers. They roped in another associate Ankit Aggarwal working with the installation service provider at Patel Nagar.

All the three miscreants left their job and since February, 2014, they have committed thefts in 54 houses and have stolen 77 hard disks. In order to gain entry in the houses of the customers, they posed themselves as employees of TATA Sky. Since the installation service providers had access to the data base of the TATA Sky, the miscreants had obtained from data base information of the customers of TATA Sky. They targeted the houses of these customers spread all over Delhi which included Malviya Nagar, Chattarpur Farms, Vasant Vihar, Karol Bagh, Punjabi Bagh-Paschim Vihar area, Anand Vihar, Preet Vihar and Vivek Vihar area. They sold the hard disk at Rs. 1750/- each.

The removal of the hard disk from the set top box did not affect the service of the telecast of the TV programmes and the customers realized that something was wrong with the set top box only when they tried to record the programme for no recording could be done as the hard disk had been removed from the set top boxes.

The third associate Ankit Aggarwal and Sameer, the receiver of stolen property are absconding. Efforts are being made to apprehend them.

Local police stations have been informed.

Amarjit and Ct. Joginder was constituted under the close supervision of Sh. Anil Kapoor, ACP/Paharganj/Central District, Delhi.

INVESTIGATION

The truck driver Tofiq and helper Salim (name changed) was put to sustained interrogation. During the interrogation of Tofiq, his statement was found to be contradictory thereby creating suspicion. Accused Tofiq initially did not confess his involvement in the crime. But, finally he broke down and confessed his involvement in the commission of crime. At the instance of accused Tofiq, accused Koshar Ali and Mohd. Yunus were arrested by the police team.

On further sustained interrogation, accused Tofiq disclosed that he along with his accomplices Qayum (distant relative of accused Tofiq), Umarddin @ Kale, Md. Ansar, Rakesh , Md Yunus and Kosar Ali hatched a conspiracy to misappropriate the valuable goods in process of transportation from Mumbai to Delhi in such a manner that none of them would come under any suspicion. In pursuance of said conspiracy, some sedative drug was given by Qayum to Tofiq for the said purpose.

On 18.07.2014, Tofiq informed Qayum about the consignment (320 bags of black pepper) loaded in the truck no. DL 1LGC 0220 from Mumbai to Delhi. Accordingly, as per plan, Tofiq and helper Salim (name changed) reached Dharuhera, where one person Kale meet them and arranged for the misappropriation / stealing / transportation / disposal of the said goods. After that Mohd. Ynus and Koshar Ali (who were later on identified as buyer of black pepper) reached Dharuhera in a car from Delhi and accused Rakesh was also present there. Kale introduced one Koshar Ali to Tofiq (driver of truck) after having received an amount of Rs. 2,00,000/- from one person (who was later on identified as Mohd, Younus, likely purchaser of the said goods) and handed over the loaded truck to accused Koshal Ali. Koshar Ali along with helper Salim (name changed) drove the truck to Delhi. Rakesh and Tofiq (driver of truck) started for Delhi in a car. Accused Rakesh took the cell phone of truck driver Tofiq and switched off the same.

On intervening night of 22/23.07.2014, both the vehicles (truck and the car) reached Yamuna Bridge near ISBT. Accused Rakesh and Tofiq further directed helper Salim (name changed) to sit in the car in which Rakesh and Tofiq (driver of the truck) were already sitting. Rakesh told them that they would wait there till the said truck gets unloaded at Seelampur in Trans Yamuna. After 3-4 hours, the empty truck being driven by Koshar Ali came back at the ISBT flyover. In furtherance of the said conspiracy, Rakesh said helper Salim (name changed) to drive the empty truck and follow the car on NH-8. As per plan, the said empty truck and the car reached at Palwal. To misguide the police, and conceal the plan of conspiracy, Rakesh asked Tofiq (driver of truck) and helper Salim (name changed) to take the sedative drug to misguide the police. At the instance of accused Koshar Ali and Mohd. Yunus, 300 bags of black pepper were recovered from Seelampur, Delhi.

On verification, it was found that accused Koshal Ali has also previously been involved in eleven cases of robbery, theft and Arms Act of P.Ss. Timarpur, New Friends Colony, Samaypur Badli, Moti Nagar, Kotwali, Kashmere Gate and Sarai Rohilla, Delhi.
