Dear Student and Parent(s):
Welcome to Math Analysis! I am excited about the upcoming year. By working together I know we can make this a fun and productive year!
Course Information:
Math Analysis is an advanced mathematics course for students preparingfor APCalculus. A strong emphasis is placed on critical thinking skills, verbal and written communication ofmethods for problem solving. Students areasked to explain answers and show methods on all their work including classwork, homework, and assessments.
Our first semester will concentrate on the trigonometry portion of the course. Among our explorations aretrig definitions (including the unit circle), graphing, identities, and solvingtrig equations.
Our second semester will extend topics explored in Algebra II which are essential precalculus concepts including functions, polynomials, rational and radical equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, sequences/series, conics & parametric equations and other topics as time permits to provide an introduction to Calculus.
Materials Needed:
- 3-ring binder with paper
- Small amount of graph paper (or print your own—I’ll show you!)
- Pencils and erasers, 1 or 2 pens (for corrections—no red please!)**to avoid loss of points, a pencil MUST be used on all quizzes and tests!
- TI graphing calculator (highly recommended) We will be using TI-84 CE graphing calculators in our class. If you do not have a graphing calculator already, PLEASE consider purchasing one for your use at home.
Grading:
- Homework/classwork participation10%
- Quizzes 35%
- Testsand Projects55%
Homework will be assigned on a regular basis, posted on the board, and listed on the class website. I will NOT be recording a daily completion grade. However, students should attempt at least some of the assigned problems everyday, checking and correcting their answers by comparing them to the keys on my website or the back of the textbook (for odd book exercises). I will still be answering homework questions the next day in class. Though this may seem like a free 10%, students CAN lose points in this category by not participating in class discussions and activities. Also, be aware that students who do not regularly practice concepts generally do poorly on quizzes and tests!I realize students have many obligations both in and out of school and I have given flexibility here so students can learn to manage their study time. Plan out and use this wisely!
Quizzes and tests will be given periodically and graded on the traditional 100 point scale. Quizzes are usually announced in advance. Tests are always announced in advance. One quiz grade will be dropped each nine weeks (assuming at least 3 quizzes are given). Again, ALL quiz and test questions should have correct supporting work to be given full credit ---including Multiple Choice questions.
Absences:
The STUDENT is responsible for obtaining any missed assignments. Please consult my website for information, assignments, and upcoming tests and quizzes. Notes from the class should be obtained from a classmate. Missing assignments will be listed in the gradebook as 0% until completed.
Classroom Expectations:
Students are expected to come to class prepared and ready to work exhibiting a positive attitude that treats all with respect and courtesy. If problems should occur, they will be dealt with accordingly which may include parent contact, detention and/or administrative referral.
