“Even Though”

John 8:1-11
1: But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2: At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them.
3: The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group

4: and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.
5: In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?"
6: They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
7: But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."
8: Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9: At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.
10: Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
11: "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."

Introduction:

  • The way Jesus responds to things is not always “as you would expect!”
  • “Even Though” the law told Jesus what to do, He responded another way.
  • Jesus helped this woman “Even Though” …….

1. Even though He had no relationship with her.

3: The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group

A. She is never given a name – just ‘woman’

B. It is apparent that Jesus does not know her.

2. Even though she did not obey His teachings.

4: and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.

A. It is very evident that she did not obey the law

B. Jesus on many occasions spoke of obeying the commandments

C. Even though she had broken one of the commandments, Jesus still

helped the woman.

3. Even though she did not look like someone He should be

helping.

A. We aren’t told about her appearance in this passage, but there is a

good chance she was not dressed in ‘Sunday-go-to-meeting’ clothes!

B. Sometimes we hinder the desire of Jesus to help someone because of

the way they look, their background, etc…

4. Even though she deserved to be stoned to death.

5: In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?"

A. Levitical law was plain – she was to be stoned!

B. By all accounts according to the Law, she deserved to be stoned….

5. Even though the real issue was to trap Jesus.

6: They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

  • They brought this woman to the attention of Jesus, not for the purpose of her restoration, but so they could entrap Jesus in order to discredit his authority as the Son of God.

  • If Jesus let this woman off easy, then Jesus would be guilty of disobeying the Law of Moses that he said he came to fulfill.
  • If Jesus condemned the woman, then Jesus would be just like the Pharisees and teachers of the law.
  • The Pharisees and teachers of the Law desired to stone the woman for the sin of adultery, but Jesus neither ignored the sin of the woman nor did he condemn the woman.

6. Even though she didn’t expect Him to help her.

A. She knew the consequence of her actions.

B. Surely she had witnessed other women being stoned

C. She just responded to his call….

7. Even though she did nothing to repay Him.

10: Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
11: "No one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."

A. There is no second chapter of this account.

B. We can only assume the outcome

C. It appears her payment was “sinning no more”
