Individual Placement Description

Placement / F1 - MAU
The department / The Medical Assessment Unit has 50 beds and 4 Acute Medicine Consultants. All acute medical emergencies are managed through the unit and there are twice daily ward rounds but continuous review also.
The type of work to expect and learning opportunities / All F1 Doctors in hospital posts will generally be ward based during the ‘normal’ working day and expected to deliver the daily medical care of all the patients on their ward irrespective of specialty. The overall educational objectives of the F1 year are to provide the trainee with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to
·  Take a history and examine a patient
·  Identify and synthesize problems
·  Prescribe safely
·  Keep an accurate and relevant medical record
·  Manage time and clinical priorities effectively
·  Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues
·  Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care
·  Act in a professional manner at all times
·  Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients with general medical problems
·  Educate patients effectively
·  Become life-long learners and teachers
Trainees are closely supervised and expected to adhere to high standards of medical competence. Trainees are expected to follow guidance on maintaining core medical knowledge and comply with infection control and aseptic practices.
Trainees work closely with members the MDT.
Teaching will be provided during consultant ward rounds, and from other more senior doctors.

Main duties of the placement / Your role will be to ensure that all the ward jobs (created by the ward round) are completed and recorded. These include writing blood cards, taking difficult bloods (those the phlebotomists and nurses are unable to do), cannulation, TTOs etc. You will assist the teams on the ward rounds and write in the notes and clerk in patients as directed.
