Offspring Tend to Resemble Their Parents
Science-Grade 1
I. Objectives
Recognize that offspring tend to resemble their parents
• The student should be able to match 5 offspring with their parents after whole class discussion.

II. Materials
• Animal flash cards (
• Paper with animal names printed on them
• Farm babies ditto (

III. Procedures:
• Show students the animal flash cards
• Discuss the information about the animals on the back of each flash card
• Have students practice saying the proper name for each offspring and its parent
• Divide the class in half
• Give papers with the mother and father names to half the students
• Give papers with the baby names to the other half of the students
• Designate a place in the classroom to be the barn
• Have all the students with mother and father names come to the barn
• Tell the students that when you call out "The barn is open" all the babies need to scatter throughout the classroom
• The babies need to find their parents by correctly calling out the parents names to be found
• When the babies call out the parents names correctly the parent needs to go get their baby and bring it in the barn
• Discuss with students how offspring tend to resemble their parents
• Have the students match the correct offspring with its parents on the ditto
• The students will need to draw two lines from each offspring
• The first line needs to connect the offspring to its mother while the second line will need to connect the offspring with its father

IV. Assessment
I will assess my student in several ways during this lesson. I will assess my students by giving them the farm babies ditto. The student will need to match 5 offspring with their parents. For example, the students need to match the chick with its mother the hen and its father the rooster. I will also assess my students during the farm animal game. The students should be able to pair themselves up according to their names. For example, the student with the name chick should be able to find the hen and rooster.

V. Modifications
For my high level students I will have them complete the paper chicky-chain to decorate the classroom. The students will need to fold a piece of paper into thirds. The students will them put the chicken template on the paper and trace around it. Finally, the students will need to cut around the trace. The students will decorate their chickens with markers and crayons.

For my low level students I will have them complete a different farm babies ditto. The students will need to match 5 offspring with their parents. The students will need to draw one line from each offspring to its parent instead of two. For example, the student will need to draw a line from the hen and rooster to the chick. This ditto is different because it has the hen and rooster in the same box instead of the hen being on the right side of the chick and the rooster being on the left side of the chick.
