Job Title: Junior Sister/Charge Nurse HDU

Grade: F

Accountable to: Director of Nursing

Reports to: HDU Manager

Minimal Qualifications: 1st Level Registration

ENB 998 or equivalent

ILS Certificate

Job Summary: Providing high quality nursing care. Supporting and deputising for the HDU Manager in the management of a HDU working towards development and maintaining a cohesive multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

1. Nursing Practice

1.1 Be responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care without direct supervision.

1.2 Deputising for the HDU Manager, ensure that all nursing procedures are carried out in accordance with Parkside Hospital Policy.

1.3 In conjunction with the HDU Manager and other members of the HDU team, set, monitor and maintain agreed standards of nursing care.

1.4 Assist the HDU Manager in ensuring that all aspects of National Guidelines and Care Standards are met within HDU.

1.5 Manage the clinical area and co-ordinate nursing care for patients ensuring that agreed policies are followed.

1.6 Initial, encourage and develop new ideas. Informing the Director of Nursing of on going developments with in the clinical area.

1.7 Initiate, encourage and develop new innovations in conjunction with the HDU Manager.

2. Management and Leadership

2.1 Provide clear and consistent leadership to junior nurses.

2.2 Communicate and co-operate with all other wards and departments.

2.3 Manage the clinical area in the absence of HDU Manager and co-ordinate nursing care for patients ensuring that agreed policies are followed.

2.4 Provide information of incidents and accidents to staff, patients and visitors as required.

2.5 Exercise leadership to create high staff morale and good working relationships.

2.6 Arrange in consultation with the Admissions Dept. the admission, transfer or discharge of patients in accordance with the hospital's Discharge Policy.

2.7 Attend any departmental meetings as required.

2.8 Carry the bleep for HDU and be prepared to respond to emergency calls throughout the hospital.

2.9 Participate in 'on-call' and shift duties and provide cover for HDU.

3. Education and Professional Responsibilities

3.1 Assist in the development and expansion of the roles of nurses in accordance with The Code (NMC 2008): Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics for Nurses and midwives.

3.2 Assist the HDU Manager in the effective use of the nursing budget.

3.3 Maintain a ward environment that is conducive to learning and development.

3.4 Participate in student nurse education and assessment in accordance with the hospital and requirements and in consultation with the Liaison Tutor and link sister.

3.5 Supervise and participate in the training and development of junior staff in speciality care and HDU.

3.7 Maintain up-to-date records. Ensuring that confidentiality is respected and that the NMC standards for "Record Keeping" are met.

3.8 Notify the HDU Manager/Director of Nursing of problems and incidents and initiate action as appropriate.

3.9 Assist in the development of an induction programme for all members of staff new to HDU.

4. Human Resource

4.1 Participate in the selection, interview and appointment of junior staff.

4.2 Counsel staff and learners on personal and professional matters as appropriate.

4.3 Assist in the development of staff to be creative, questioning and competent practitioners.

4.4 Ensure that staff adheres to the Sickness and Absence procedure.

4.5 Ensure that all staff wears the correct uniform as per the Hospital Policy.

4.6 Ensure that all staff are aware of, and work within, the policies of Parkside Hospital.

5. Research and Development

5.1 Assist in the implementation and evaluation of models of care used in HDU-utilising research findings as appropriate.

5.2 Utilise nursing research to enhance nursing practice.

5.3 Participate in any Clinical Audit programmes within the unit.

5.4 Keep records of any research undertaken within HDU.

Experience 2 years at E Grade in the acute setting.
