WORKSHOP
“Multifunctional textiles
based on hybrid coatings and nanoparticles”
Naples, September 17th 2013
Under the auspices of
COST ACTION MP1105 – “Sustainable flame retardancy for textiles and related materials based on nanoparticles substituting conventional chemicals (Acronym: FLARETEX)”
Environmental concerns over the use of flame retardant systems have enhanced the need for successful alternatives with decreased toxicological impact. In the last 10 years it has been observed that hybrid coatings and nanoparticles can significantly improve the fire retarding performance of textiles allowing also to confer multifunctionality.
The workshop is just intended to give participants an overview of the state-of-the-art and perspectives on the use of inorganic, hybrid organic/inorganic coatings or micro- and nano-particles for conferring multifunctional features (flame retardancy, durability, wettability, comfort, ...), to both natural and synthetic fibres and fabrics.
Contents:
- Overview of the synthetic routes, particularly the Sol-Gel and Layer by Layer techniques nowadays actively studied in their application to textiles, that can confer multifunctionality.
- Description of some smart textile systems based on hybrid coatings or nanoparticles.
- Industry’s concerns on the up-to-date Flame Retarded systems based on hybrid coatings or nanoparticles.
- Toxicity and environmental issues related to the use of hybrid coatings or nanoparticles as potential halogen-free Flame Retardants.
