THE ANGER OF GOD

Nahum 1:1-7

INTRODUCTION

A. No other book so emphasizes God’s wrath.

B. People would rather ignore this side of God’s nature, concentrating instead on His love, mercy and grace. RO 11:22.

DISCUSSION

I. GOD’S WRATH IS RESERVED FOR HIS ENEMIES. Nahum 1:2.

A. God is only angry when He must be. Nahum 1:7.

B. Who are God’s enemies?

1. RO 1:18.

2. EP 5:3-6.

3. JA 4:4.

4. CO 1:21.

5. PH 3:18, 19.

6. LK 19:27.

C. Notice the strong words that are used to comprehend the full scope of God’s anger.

II. GOD IS NOT A “QUICK-TEMPERED” GOD. Nahum 1:3.

A. “Slow to anger” shows He is longsuffering.

1. 2 PE 3:9.

2. RO 2:4.

3. PS 78:37-39.

B. God and Nineveh.

III. GOD IS LONGSUFFERING; HOWEVER, THIS MUST NOT BE INTEPRETED THAT HE LACKS POWER. Nahum 1:3.

A. Some think God will not punish. 2 PE 3:3-9; EC 8:11.

B. God’s power described. 2 CH 20:6.

C. Nahum 3:8-10.

IV. GOD WILL NOT ACQUIT THE WICKED. Nahum 1:3.

A. “Not at all,” means without exception, not one single time. The meaning is clear: “God Will Not Clear The Guilty.”

1. RO 2:5-11.

2. Though God is “slow to anger,” He is still “to anger” against every sin.

B. God must always be Himself.

1. Jonah 3:10-4:2.

2. RO 6:23; 2 TH 1:7-9.

C. HE 10:26-31 shows a NT reminder of this same justice.

CONCLUSION

A. The text points to God’s anger, mercy, omnipotence and justice.

This lesson is about God. God is the same today. He has not changed.

C. Will you obey God? Can we afford to be or do such as would make God “against” us?
