OBJECT: INFECTIOUS DISEASES IN THE SCHOOLS

Infectious diseases are common at school and can have an impact on health. Certain infectious diseases are contagious and can be transmitted from one person to another.

VACCINATION MATTERS

Vaccination is the best way to prevent certain diseases and to control their spread in the population.

You should have received vaccines against diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles, German measles, mumps and chickenpox (if you have not already had this disease). If you are unsure, consult your CISSS or your clinic who will complete your vaccinations if necessary.Whooping cough cases are still particularly frequent this year. All adults should have received a whooping cough booster shot.

If you are planning to or become pregnant, it is also important to check your status in regard to chickenpox, German measles and erythema infectiosum (fifth disease).

Preventing the spread of infectious diseases also involves the application of hygiene measures such as washing your hands, using paper tissues when you cough or sneeze(or coughing and sneezing into your sleeve or upper arm), avoiding sharing personal objects, covering wounds with a dressing and taking measures to avoid contact with another person’s blood. These are simple and effective actions that everyone can take.

DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, REMEMBER THAT:

  1. If you have a specific medical condition such as pulmonary disease, cardiac disease, immunosuppressionor if you become pregnant, ask your doctor which contagious diseases are dangerous for you and advise the school administration. The CISSS nurse will be informed and will be able to warn you if there is such a case in the school.
  2. If you are ill and you consult a doctor, it is important to ask whether you have a contagious disease. If this is the case, please advise the school administration quickly (see the list of diseases to be reported on the reverse). The CISSS nurse will be informed and, if necessary, will contact you for more information and to answer your questions. For certain contagious diseases, exclusion from the workplace may be required until the contagious period is over.

Preventing disease is everyone’s business.

Thank you for your cooperation,
