Health Science Final Exam Study Guide

DO NOT BE LATE TO YOUR FINAL! Please note that the final exam starts earlier than the regularly scheduled class time (Tues. Dec. 13 from 8:00-10:30AM). Please bring the skinny green scantron (numbered 1-100) that we have used for all of our exams. Bring at least two sharpened pencils with you so that you don’t have to sharpen them in class.

The Final Exam is worth 150 points:

50 points will come from review material (Ch’s, 1,2,3,10-16 and 20) and 100 pts. will come from the new material (Ch’s. 5, 6, 17, and the STD handout

Chapter 1 (Taking Charge of your Health)

·  What is wellness and what are the six dimensions of wellness? How is each dimension of wellness maintained?

·  How are the dimensions of wellness connected?

Chapter 2 (Stress: The Constant Challenge)

·  Which two systems control the stress (“fight or flight”) response? Which system works slowly, which system works fast? How do they work together to allow your body to respond to a stressful situation? (think about the release of cortisol and adrenaline from the adrenal glands and what changes these hormones bring about in the body.)

·  What are effective and ineffective ways of managing stress?

·  What is the basic organization of the CNS? What types of activities do the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems control?

·  What are the three essential nutrients that supply energy? Which one supplies the most energy?

·  What are HDLs and LDLs? Which ones are “good” and which ones are “bad” for you?

·  What is the difference between refined and whole grain foods? Which are healthier for you?

·  What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats? Which are healthier for you?

Chapter 13 (Exercise for Health and Fitness)

·  What is physical fitness and what are the five components of physical fitness?

·  What are the long term effects/benefits of exercise?

Chapter 14 (Weight Management)

·  What Factors Contribute To Excess Body Fat?

·  What is obesity and what are the dangers of being obese?

Sex and Your Body (Ch. 5)

·  Know the function and location of the male and female sex organs and related structures.

·  What is removed during a circumcision?

·  What are sex hormones and where in the body are they produced?

·  What sex chromosomes will result in male vs. female and at what point is it determined?

·  What is conception? How many chromosomes does an egg and sperm carry?

·  I want you to know the stages of the menstrual cycle and what main event happens in each? Pay attention to FSH, LH, Estrogen, Progesterone and their effects on the endometrium (innermost lining of uterus) and the follicle w/ egg

·  What is dysmenorrhea? Know which of the three forms is the most severe and least severe. (PT, PMS and PMDD)

·  When and what happens in males during puberty?

·  What is menopause and what are some of things we discussed in class that occur during menopause?

·  What happens to estrogen in females and testosterone in males as they age?

·  Know the sexual problems and dysfunctions for males and females listed on the power point.

Contraception (Ch. 6)

·  What is a contraceptive?

·  Know the four general types of contraceptives. (hormonal, barrier, surgical, natural methods).

·  What exactly is done during a tubal ligation and vasectomy?

·  For each of the contraceptives discussed in class (and therefore on the powerpoint) make sure you know the following:

o  How they prevent pregnancy

o  What form are they in? (pill, patch, etc.)

o  What are two advantages and disadvantages?

·  What is abstinence, fertility awareness (calendar and temperature method)?

·  How long does a fertilized egg live once its ovulated?

·  What is the left over follicle called once the egg is ovulated and what does it produce?

·  How long can sperm live in a woman’s body?

·  What is the pathway of sperm from seminiferous tubules in the testes to the urethral opening in the penis.

Immunity and Infection (Ch. 17)

·  What is the chain of infection and how can it be broken? Be able to define pathogen, reservoir, portal of entry and exit and host.

·  What are the components and overall function of the immune system?

·  What is a pathogen?

·  What is an antigen?

·  What are all branches of the immune system and their characteristics?

·  Know the types of surface and internal barriers and how they function to protect you.

·  Know the important cells for each branch of the adaptive and innate defense system.

·  What are the four phases of the immune response and what happens in each one?

·  What is the basis of immunization?

·  What is the difference between active and passive immunity?

·  What is an autoimmune disease?
