Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Can IBMYP students take any courses in summer school to “get ahead” or make room for other classes in their schedules?
  • Students may opt to take Geometry in summer school, which would allow them to take AP Calculus or AP Statistics their senior year. They may NOT take Algebra II as the summer school course is largely remedial and will not provide students with adequate background for advancement.
  • Students may take the new Personal Finance/Economics course in summer school. Currently, the only no-cost alternative is to take it online as an independent 8th class sophomore year.
  • Students may take Health & PE in summer school but summer school does not offer honors credit. IB MYP Health & PEdoesgive honors credit. There is really no reason to do this, however, as students cannot get ahead in their MYP curriculum.
  • Again, students may NOT take Algebra II in summer school to advance. This course MUST be taking in the IB program, which is not offered in summer school!!
  • When do IBMYP students take Driver’s Education?
  • If students take summer PE, they have room in their schedule for Drivers Ed during the school year. Otherwise, they must take it through evening school, summer school or a private provider.
  • How do IB students stay involved in music?
  • Students may take MYP Vocal Music, Early Bird Chorus or Early Bird Strings for credit. The latter two courses are honor courses in junior and senior years. Students may also take Marching Band after school. Students receive .5 honors credit. Students in marching band are also eligible to continue playing with the concert or jazz bands, attending rehearsals after school.
