Learning Style: Auditory, visual, aural, kinaesthetic
Time: 1.5 hours / Method:
1.Prior to this lesson pre-teaching is needed. Also,
make arrangements with other teachers to do the
survey. As a whole class use an overhead picture
of credit cards (or show your own) to draw out
vocabulary for the lesson such as, annual fee,
interest, air miles, purchase et cetera. Prepare some
questions such as, “How can a credit card be helpful
and unhelpful?” For example, establishing a credit
rating for new immigrants is important.
2. Demonstrate the tally system and purpose.
3. Have the students complete the survey.
4. Have the students return to class and total their
answers. Check that they have used the tally system.
5. Teach, if necessary, that percent is out of a hundred
and demonstrate how to convert their answers. Have
calculators available to students.
6. Prepare students for the computer task. Ask them to
type in the email address located on their handout and
locate the pie graph site.
7. Have the student’s type in their answers and choose
their colours and print their pie chart/graph.
Follow Up: After the students’ complete their graph. Have them write a paragraph describing what each portion represents. Then put them in groups and ask them to “share and compare” their answers. For example, “Who should or should not have a credit card?
Debrief/Transfer: Ask the students the following questions:
1.  What did we do?
2.  Why did we do it? What did we learn?
