Growth Group discussion questions for Genesis 10-11
Week of March 11-14, 2018

  1. NCC Q27: Are all people, just as they were lost through Adam, saved through Christ?
A: No, only those who are elected by God and united to Christ by faith. Nevertheless God in his mercy demonstrates common grace even to those who are not elect, by restraining the effects of sin and enabling works of culture for human well-being.
Memorize, meditate on and be ready to recite 1 John 5:11-12.
  2. What principles or thoughts had the most impact on you from the message on this passage on Sunday, March 11th? How were you specifically challenged? What points of application did you take awayfrom the message?
  3. Read Genesis 10:1 - 11:26.
  4. God, in his mercy, preserves a group of people to begin populating the earth again after the flood. But it wasn’t long before the sinful hearts of the people showed themselves. “Very few cared by what means or for what end they had been preserved” (J. Calvin).
The people decide to build a city and a tower. What do you think was the motive behind the people’s drive to build the city and the tower? What were they after? (v. 4)Do you see this in our culture today? Where?
  5. Did God approve of their project and their ambition? Why or why not? (vv. 5-6; Ps. 49:16-20)
What do we know about God and his power that makes their ambition so foolhardy or even comically tragic? (Is. 40:12-24, Ps. 34:16, Ps. 103:15-18, Prov. 21:30)
  6. What was God’s purpose in confusing (and multiplying) their languages and disbursing the people? What would this accomplish? (v. 8)
  7. We sometimes hear of someone’s ambition to go out and “make a name for himself (or herself)” (e.g. v. 4).
a)Is this good or not so good in God’s eyes? What does this kind of ambition say about their heart or their motives? (Prov. 11:2, 16:18, 22:29; Matt. 23:1-12, 1 Pet. 5:5, 1 Sam. 2:7-9)
    b) What might be a more biblical or God-honoringambition?How can you apply this to your situation
(job, family, etc.)? (Ps. 86:11-13, Isaiah 66:2, John 3:27-30, Phil. 2:3-11)
c)In the end, what name did they (in Gen. 11)make for themselves (v. 9)? What does that name mean?
  8. We can too easily imagine ourselves completely independent of God and self-sufficient. Do we ever cease to be dependent on God? Why or why not? What is the true scope or extent of our dependence on God?
    (Acts 17:24-25, Col. 1:16-17; Prov. 16:9, 19:21; James 4:13-16)
  9. Does the confusion and multiplication of languages across the world stop the spread of the gospel? What does this say about the character of God even in the face of mankind’s continuing rebellion?
    (Rom. 2:4, 2 Pet. 3:9, Matt. 29:18-20, Acts 1:8, Rev. 5:9)
