Work Zone Awareness Week brings over 50 student designs

WICHITA, Kan.— April 3-7 is National Work Zone Awareness Week, and the Kansas Turnpike Authority has identified Davis Bloom of Overland Park as the winner of a second annual design contest that encouraged teens drivers to be aware of safe driving behaviors through work zones. Bloom was selected out of 55 other submissions from various schools around the state.

National Work Zone Awareness Week is a safety campaign held each springencouraging safe driving through work zones in order to prevent injuries and fatalities for workers and motorists. In order to reach teen drivers with this message, the Kansas Turnpike Authority held a second annual design contest for students in grades 8-12 across Kansas.

“More often than not, motorists are the ones injured or worse in work zone crashes,” said Rachel Bell, KTA’s Director of Business Services & Customer Relations. “In 2016, work zone crashes were up significantly from the previous year. Teen drivers are in their formative driving years and this contest is a way to instill those good habits early.”

Contestants submitted a ¾ page advertisement focused on work zone safety. Bloom’s work will be published in VYPE Magazine and KTA’s monthly newsletter, Turnpike Times. View Bloom’s work, as well as the other finalists, at
