Informative Speech: Admirable Leader Speech

What are the qualities or traits that make an effective leader?

Standard 9.7.15

Deliver expository (informational) presentations:

·  Provide evidence in support of a thesis and related claims, including information on all relevant perspectives.

·  Convey information and ideas from primary and secondary sources accurately and coherently.

·  Make distinctions between the relative value and significance of specific data, facts, and ideas.

·  Include visual aids by employing appropriate technology to organize and display information on charts, maps, and graphs.

·  Anticipate and address the listeners’ potential misunderstandings, biases, and expectations.

·  Use technical terms and notations accurately.

What are the qualities or traits that make an effective leader? Why are some people able to accomplish great things, while others fade into the background? What distinguishes a ‘great’ leader from a ‘good’ leader? These are just some of the types of questions you will be considering during your Admirable Leader Speech. Your goal is to convey information in an interesting and accurate manner.

Research is an important aspect of this speech. Research the following aspects of your leader’s life, including:

·  Biography of early life including historical setting

·  Greatest influence on history/culture

·  Other historical contributions

·  Personal anecdotes or stories

·  People that had a significant influence on your leader and why

Although you will research all these areas of your leader’s life, the focus of your speech will be on the 3 qualities or traits that make the person you are researching a leader.

Research & Oral Citations

Research is an important aspect of this particular speech. You will use a variety of sources: interview, magazines, books, or articles on the internet. You must orally cite all sources during your speech. For example,

Michael Corleone, director of the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, argues in a May 2002 Virginian Pilot article that "the issuance of Commercial Driver's Licenses is a waste of taxpayer money and DMV resources."

A 2003 article by Jackie Lambert on the Asian Politics website argues that "the rise of nuclear weapons on the Indian subcontinent is the biggest threat to our national security."

A study by the American Plastics Council shows that between 1998 and 2001, curbside recycling rates rose by an astounding 49%, as detailed in Alfredo Garcia's 2002 Opposing Viewpoints article.

This means that you must be careful to track what information you are getting from which sources. Use the Research Chart to take notes…see the sample. Make sure that you write down ALL the information required for credible sources: author, date, publication/website. If you do not have this information, your oral citations will not be considered credible and you will lose points on your presentation.
