History
Brief, one paragraph / MISSION
The Apparel Design and Merchandising Program (ADAM) provides educational training that prepares students with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully secure a career in the vast fields of apparel design and manufacturing. The ADAM Program fosters a well balanced educational environment which promotes professionalism, integrity and high standards of performance as they relate to the everyday operations of the apparel industry.
HISTORY
In 1970 the Peralta Community College District (PCCD) opened its third campus, the College of Alameda (COA). At that time the Fashion Art’s Program at PCCD’s Laney campus moved to the COA campus. From 1970 to 1982, the Fashion Arts Program expanded to 28 course offerings with five 1.0 contract faculty and four part-time instructors.
In the Fall quarter of 1983, the Fashion Arts Program was totally reorganized to reflect the current vocational skills needed to obtain employment within the vast divisions of the fashion industry. The revised program was renamed ADAM and it currently offers a complete vocational program in apparel design and manufacturing. The ADAM discipline offers a Two Year Certificate of Completion.

7. Community and labor market relevance
Present evidence of community need based on Advisory Committee input, industry need data, McIntyre Environmental Scan, McKinsey Economic Report, etc. This applies primarily to career-technical (i.e., vocational programs). / Apparel manufacturing has expanded on the West Coast as a national market developed for California-made sportswear. Due to a plentiful supply of highly skilled labor and it’s proximity to Pacific Rim trading partners, CA is now the largest producer of clothing in the country, manufacturing a wide range of goods for a global market. Historically, retail buyers tend to consider CA a specialty market whose reputation for innovative style and color attracts markets for clothes that are not available in other areas of the nation. Many retail stores around the country now run special promotions of CA fashions and a “Made in CA” label is often an effective sales stimulus. Since the late 70’s, CA has become a hotbed of apparel design talent, fed by a number of highly regarded apparel design colleges both in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Action Plan Steps to Address CSEP Results

Please describe your plan for responding to the above data. Consider curriculum, pedagogy/instructional, scheduling, and marketing strategies. Also, please reference any cross district collaboration with the same discipline at other Peralta colleges.

ACTION PLAN -- Include overall plans/goals and specific action steps.
Work more directly with other campus services and departments making them more aware of the specialized needs of the ADAM Program, its students and faculty. This could perhaps be accomplished with flex day activities.
AREAS THAT NEED TO BE BETTER LINKED WITH THE ADAM PROGRAM:
  • ESL Department (Development started Spring 2008)
  • Writing Center
  • Reading Lab
  • Basic Skills Lab
  • DSPS / EOPS
  • One-Stop Career Center
  • Financial Aide Center
  • Prep-Tech Program
  • Community High Schools (Established link with Alameda high schools, Spring 2008)
MARKETING AND RETENTION STRATIGIES
  • Track current job/career placement openings
  • Seek current internships and partnerships
  • Work with Peralta and community services/programs for better recruitment of students into the program
  • Maintain and upgrade ADAM website link
  • Request at least a .5 contract staff position to aide with the above suggestions

Additional Planned Educational Activities

Health/safety/legal issues:
OSHA CONCERNS
These issues have all been reported some address, but not completed.
TRAINING / (1)Currently ADAM has requested a major maintenance and repair of all lighting fixtures and electrical outlets. This request has been in the ADAM Institutional plan for 10+ years. The problem is quite severe since it impacts instructions, is a potential for accidents occurring with machinery due to the poor lighting and malfunctioning of outlets and law suits due to injury or worse, loss of life.
(2)The conditions of the 3rdfloor restrooms are appalling. Many requests have been made to maintain and correct this problem, but to date no progress or plans have been implemented. Again, thisis a severe health issue and a legal issue with respect to handicap accessibility.
(3)There are leakage problems in ADAM D301 and ADAM D306. The problems have been reported but as to date not resolved. Leakage in ADAM D301 caused damage to a computer terminal which ADAM had to replace with money from its own budget. The same potential is waiting to happen with respect to machinery in ADAM D306.
(4)Each year during warm weather wasp/yellow jackets build their nest by entering through holes in the overhang and walls on the 3rd floor of building D. Students and faculty have been attacked by the wasps but luckily not stung as to date. The problem has been reported for several years but a permanent solution to the problem needs to be addressed and resolved.
Students are trained thoroughly on the safe operation of all sewing machine operation and procedures.
Certificates and Degrees Offered / ADAM CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
(Two Year Program)
AA Degree Apparel Design and Merchandisin
Student Retention and Success / ADAM feels these areas could be improved upon with the addition of a .5 contract staff person whose job description would include dealing with retention and success of problem students, attendances issues, and tutors specifically for our students.
Progress on Student Learning
Outcomes. ( SLO % Complete) / Started and will be completed by end of Spring 2008 now the correct form has been accepted by the Curriculum Committee.
