1. ELECTION OF CHAIR

RESOLVED: THAT, in the absence of the Chair, Councillor Brendan Ryan be elected as Chair of this meeting.

2. WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS

The Chair welcomed members to the meeting and introductions were made.

3. APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE

Apologies for absence were submitted on behalf of Councillors Brocklehurst, Compton and Potter.

4. MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS AND MATTERS ARISING

(i) Minutes from the meeting held on 13 March 2012

The minutes of the meeting held on 13 March 2012 were approved as a correct record.

(ii) Matters Arising

There were no matters arising that were not included on the agenda for this meeting.

5. THE SALFORD LOCAL SYLLABUS - ONE YEAR ON

Steve Illingworth provided an update report on use of Salford Local Religious Education Syllabus following its launch in May 2011 and implementation in September 2011.

He provided details of his own reflection upon the success of the working syllabus, along with details of feedback he had received from schools which highlighted their appreciation of the work which had been undertaken in the development of the syllabus.

He indicated, in terms of primary schools, the success of the regular network meetings that had aided schools in the implementation of the syllabus. He also noted the success of the informal networking that had taken place outside of the network meetings.

In terms of secondary schools, he reported that work was continuing outside of the formal network meeting structure.

Councillor Ryan thanked Steve Illingworth for his update report and for his continued support of schools relating to the effective implementation of the RE Syllabus.

RESOLVED: THAT the update be noted.

6. FEEDBACK FROM NASACRE AGM

Alex Klein provided an update report relating to his recent attendance at the NASACRE Annual General Meeting.

He provided details of speeches made by Lat Blaylock, Editor of REToday magazine and Professor Robert Jackson, Director, Warwick Religions and Education Research Unit; Programme Director, MA Religious Education at the Warwick Institute of Education.

Discussion took place in respect of a number of issues, including -

(a) the possibility of extending an invitation to Lat Blaylock to attend a future meeting of the Salford SACRE

Steve Illingworth undertook to examine this issue and to make progress in consultation with the Chair.

(b) possible feedback from regional meetings of SACRE representatives.

(c) funding available from NASACRE for projects

Steve Illingworth undertook to examine information on the NASACRE website and to provide an update at the next meeting of the Salford SACRE.

(d) the work and function of the Salford SACRE and NASACRE

Steve Illingworth highlighted the availability of a publicity cd which could be circulated to new members of SACRE which would provide them with the required information

RESOLVED: (1) THAT the presentations made by Lat Blaylock and Professor Robert Jackson at the NASACRE AGM be circulated to all members of Salford SACRE for information. (Appendix 1 to these minutes)

(2) THAT in respect of (a) above, Steve Illingworth provide a progress report at the next meeting of this SACRE.

(3) THAT in respect of (b) above, Steve Illingworth provide a progress report at the next meeting of this SACRE.

(4) THAT in respect of (c) above, Steve Illingworth provide a progress report at the next meeting of this SACRE.

(5) THAT in respect of (d) above, Steve Illingworth provide the relevant information to Helen Oldland for circulation to new members of the Salford SACRE.

7. CONSULTANT SUPPORT FOR SACRE 2012 / 2013

Steve Illingworth reported that from September 2012, the Salford Local Authority had committed to continue to provide educational support to Salford SACRE.

He noted that the support would include -

- giving advice to SACRE on teaching and learning in RE;

- Supporting the Salford primary and secondary RE hub teachers with training events, network meetings and requests from schools as they implement the new Salford RE syllabus

- liaising with Salford schools over SACRE events such as Holocaust Commemorations;

- reporting back to SACRE on the quality of RE provision in schools

Members expressed their appreciation for the continued funding to support the work of the Salford SACRE.

8. ANY OTHER BUSINESS

(a) REQM (Religious Education Quality Mark)

Steve Illingworth presented a briefing in respect of the development and implementation of the RE Quality Mark (REQM). This led to a general discussion about other quality marks, such as the Peace Mala award.

RESOLVED: THAT Rose O’Gara and Steve Illingworth give a presentation at the next meeting of this SACRE on the Peace Mala award.

9. DATE AND TIME OF NEXT MEETING

RESOLVED: THAT the next meeting of the Salford SACRE be held on Wednesday 10 October 2012 in a Committee Room at the Salford Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton at 4.00 p.m.
