EXPERIENCING LOS ANGELES AND TRYING NEW THINGS

For this assignment you will be exploring the city and communities around you. You have until June 10th to pick one of the activities below, do it, take a photo there and write a one-page response about your experience (100 points). Some questions to think about for the response might include:

·  What did you learn doing this activity? What did you enjoying doing there?

·  What were you surprised/interested/annoyed/scared/curious about during your activity?

·  Would you recommend this activity/place to friends? Why or why not?

·  Who would appreciate this activity and why?

1.  Go Geocaching. Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices like your smartphone. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Download the free app, Geocaching Intro by Groundspeak Inc. Navigation to help you find a cache near you. Be considerate and follow the rules, read Geocaching 101 info online before you start. Please take a photo of your find and show it to Ms. Frank. (Free)

2.  Visit Watts Towers, a historic city landmark in Watts. Tours are three dollars for teens Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m.- 3:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. every half hour. The last tour of the day is at 3 p.m. If you don’t want to pay for a tour your can read the information posted on the gates and look in on the structure. Take a photo with you and the Towers and show it to me. (For the tour $7 adults, $3 children 13-17, 12 and under with an adult are free or free// 103rd Street/Watts Towers Metro stop)

3.  See the historic "América Tropical" mural by David Alfaro Siqueiros, located on a building on Olvera Street. This mural was considered too “too politically charged” and whitewashed over in 1932. Last year it was restored and is now open to the public. Admission to the America Tropical Interpretative Center is free Tuesday – Sunday 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. The address is 125 Paseo de La Plaza Los Angeles, CA 90012. Take a photo! (Free)

4.  Go to a local Farmer’s Market. Find one near you and try some free samples, maybe even support local farmers and buy some seasonal fruits or veggies. Take a photo of you there. (Free, unless you plan to eat)

5.  Explore and/or picnic in Grand Park in Downtown LA. Grand Park stretches from The Music Center on the west to City Hall on the east between First and Temple streets and is accessible by the Metro and has a parking lot (Lot 10 on N Broadway between First Street and Temple Street). Look at the park’s events calendar and plan a walk through the wade-able pool! Please take of photo of you enjoying the park. (The park is free but transportation there is not// Civic Center/Grand Park Metro stop).

6.  Support the AMA Drama students by attending “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown” in Lawndale High School’s CVCA. It plays at 7 pm May 14,15, 22, 23, 24. You could also usher the event for community service. Show me your ticket stub or service hours. (Tickets $5, kids five and under are free).

7.  Check out a LA museum like LACMA and the tar pits, the Getty, MOCA, The Science Center (has the Space Shuttle Endeavor), or The Natural History Museum. Check their websites for more information and fees. Take a photo there.

8.  Take a ride on Angel’s Flight for only 50 cents! You can board one of the two orange and black incline funicular railways dating back to 1901, when Bunker Hill was one of the most fashionable neighborhoods in Los Angeles. The cars, Olivet and Sinai, ferried prominent citizens up and down the steep slope between Hill and Olive streets. You can eat lunch at Grand Central Market or check out the views from the park in 500 Days of Summer. Smile and take a photo. (50 cents and transportation to get there// Pershing Square Metro Stop).

9.  Get active and hike to the observatory in Griffith Park or trek through another local park. (Free)
