THE HEWARS CHARITY

An Oxborough village charity for the poor, chronically sick, disabled and the elderly.

Thanks to the 1619 Will of Thomas Hewar of Castle Rising, land was left that he owned at Oxborough, for the benefit of the Church and of the poor in perpetuity. This was how the Hewars Trust was formed and now exists.
Rent from the ten acres of arable land at Ferry Lane, shooting rights of the 13 acres of Caldecote Fen (known as the Poor Fen), plus one sixth of income from a Cockley Cley charity is received by the Hewars Charity. A third of the money goes to the church fabric fund, and a grant goes to Gooderstone School, ostensibly to buy books for Oxborough children. The remainder is available to give to the elderly, the chronically sick or disabled, those in conditions of need, hardship or distress who have lived in the parish of Oxborough for 3 years or more.

Great consideration has been given by the Trustees to ensure that any distribution is fair but also keeping more in line with the original intentions of the rules of the Trust. Therefore, instead of the normal Christmas distribution, anyone in Oxborough village who considers themselves to be in need, and who comes under the above categories, may apply to the Hewars Charity at any time of the year, and the Trust will help in whatever way they can. All applications received will be given immediate attention by the Trustees, and the applicant will be informed of the Trustees decision within 10 days or less, depending on the urgency of the matter.

Grants of money or providing or paying for items, services, or facilities calculated to reduce the need, hardship or distress of such persons in the above categories are one-off payments.

If you would like to apply, please complete the form below.

Please return the form to:

Mrs E Mason, Honorary Clerk and Trustee, Hewars Charity, 31 Oxborough Village, Oxborough, Norfolk. PE33 9PS. Please return this form by the 10th December.

Anyone in the village of Oxborough needing help to purchase school, college or University books etc may apply at any time during the year by writing to the Honorary Clerk of the Hewars Charity at the above address.
