About the National Cancer Registry

The National Cancer Registry (NCRI) was established by the Minister for Health in 1991. It is funded by the Department of Health & Children and currently operates in association with University College Cork.

The functions of the NCRI are:

  • to identify, collect, classify, record, store, and analyse information relating to the incidence and prevalence of cancer and related tumours in Ireland.
  • to promote and facilitate the use of the data collected, through approved research, and in the planning and management of services.
  • to publish an Annual Report based on the activities of the Registry.
  • to furnish advice, information and assistance in relation to any aspect of such service to the Minister.

Job Title: Clerical Officer

Reporting To: Research Manager (Conan Donnelly)

Hours:18.5hours per week

Salary: Salary will be in accordance with the Department of Health & Children grade III€11,560 - €19,362.The appointment will be made at a point on the scale commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Contract: This is a specified purpose contractwhich will end when the work assigned to this post ends (as decided by the line manager) or when the funding to support such work ends, whichever occurs first. The post is available immediately.

Probation: A probationary period of six months will apply.

Notice: 1 monthnotice in writing is required.

Annual Leave: 29 days per annum (pro-rata).

Confidentiality: The post holder will be required to comply with the confidentiality procedures of

the NCRI with regard to patient identifiable data.

Location: The post is based at NCRI headquarters in Cork

Grievance &

Disciplinary: These will be as agreed between management and staff.

Procedures: The terms of any relevant agreements concerning this grade between the

Department of Health & Children and the Unions representing staff at the Registry

will apply.

Background to the post

The National Cancer Registry collects and analyses data on all new cases of cancer diagnosed in people living in Ireland. In addition to this, the Registry has an active research programme and is undertaking several large research projects including the Irish Prostate Cancer Outcomes Research study (IPCOR).

The aim of IPCOR is to collect detailed clinical and quality of life data on Irish men’s prostate cancer journey to better inform future care delivery, knowledge of the disease and best use of health care innovations and resources. The registry collects detailed clinical data about prostate cancer patients, such as the type of treatment they are receiving, and patient’s self-reported experiences of care, their physical and mental well-being and health related quality of life

The advertised post will support collection of data from patient reported outcome measure surveys (PROMS)

Job description

The post-holder will be responsible for providing clerical and administrative support to research projects.

The specific responsibilities of the post will be:

  • Checking inputted data for errors
  • Collating and cataloguing documents related to the study
  • Generating and printing material for mailing
  • Sorting and collating large volumes of printed material and organization of incoming and outgoing mail
  • Assisting with large mailings (e.g. surveys, letters to hospital clinicians, etc)
  • Data entry of questionnaires and other information on a database
  • Recording and reporting on anomalies found during data checking
  • Other clerical or administrative tasks as required.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to improve working practices

Person Specification

Essential qualifications and experience

The successful candidate will have two years experience in an office or research environmentandstrong skills in using Microsoft Office (especially Microsoft WORD). Good organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail will be critical in this role.

Desirable experience and training.

Familiarity with medical terminology would be useful, but is not essential.

Experience of some of the following is also desirable:

  • dealing with confidential information/data or data/information on sensitive subjects;
  • using Microsoft Excel, Access or other database software;
  • experience or knowledge of working in a research environment;
  • developing procedures to ensure consistency and accuracy;
  • experience of working with medical data
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good time management and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Experience of handling large mailings
