¡HOLA! Bienvenido to your first year of study of the Spanish language. The ability to speak and understand Spanish is a valuable tool for you to use in our multilingual world. The recent developments in transportation, trade, politics, economics, and exchange programs emphasize the importance of foreign language competency. Although it takes several years to build fluency, the first year helps to build a foundation and places an emphasis on vocabulary and speaking proficiency.

I. Objectives for this year

A. Begin the study of Spanish grammar.

B. Learn vocabulary and use it in practical situations.

C. Begin speaking ability through paired/small group work, oral presentations and tests.

D. Develop listening and reading comprehension.

E. Gain an understanding of the culture of Spanish-speaking countries.

F. Begin writing and pronunciation skills.

II. Grades

A.The Scott County grading scale will be used:

A: 92-100 B: 84-91 C: 76-83 D: 68-75 F: 67 and below

B. Grades will be based on a point system but can be categorized as follows:

1. Participation -- 50 pts at end of each nine weeks.

The student will receive 50 pts for coming to class on time and prepared

and for following all class rules.

2. Notebook -- 50 pts at end of each nine weeks. The student will receive 50 pts

for keeping an orderly collection of all notes and handouts.

3. Tests --100 pts approximately, given at the end of each chapter/lesson.

4. Daily work/Homework -- Only accepted one day late for partial credit.

5. Portfolio piece -- Mandatory.

6. Extra Credit -- newspaper, magazine or Internet articles relating to Hispanic

culture in any way, taped items from the television, CDs, photographs,

items collected in Spanish speaking countries, etc. The students are to

present the item(s) and give a brief explanation of its importance or

meaning. Extra credit points will be added as extra credit on tests, not to

exceed 10 pts (1 letter grade) per test.

III. Daily requirements for the class:

1. Pencil or pen

2. Notebook (large 3 ring binder) with paper

3. Agenda book

4. Textbook and workbook – I do not have spares in the classroom.
