CULTURAL PROGRAM

Zaragoza is the fifth most populated city in Spain (700.000 inhabitants) and one of the oldest in the country. It was founded in 24bC.by the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus (the city was called Cesar Augusta). From those times remain the theatre (the second largest in Spain after that of Merida), the fluvial port or the Roman Walls. In VIII century the city was taken by Moslems up to 1118 when it was conquered by the Christian kings. From this period it remains Aljaferia Palace the only Muslim castle in Europe. Zaragoza was the capital of the Kingdom of Aragon, the most important military power in the Mediterranean Sea from XII to XV century. In 1492, the marriage between Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabel of Castle gave birth to the modern Spain. In XV century it was founded the University of Zaragoza, one of the oldest in Europe.

At present, Zaragoza is a modern and friendly city, plenty of cultural life and entertainment. A guided historical and anthropological tour of the city (buildings, cathedrals, roman ruins) and the region (including sky resorts and national parks at Pyrenees Mountains) will be offered during the last week of the program.

HOUSING ARRANGEMENTS:

1-Furnished apartments near the University hospital are available at a reasonable price. It is estimated that this may run around $ 650 a month and each apartment could be shared by 2 or 3 students. This will keep the housing cost below $ 250 per person for the whole stay.

TRANSPORTATION:

We recommend that students purchase a roundtrip flight to Madrid and that they take the train (AVE) from Madrid to Zaragoza. This takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Zaragoza has a modern train station connected to other Spanish and European cities. Public transportation in Zaragoza is efficient and readily available. Taxis are relatively inexpensive (about US $ 8 the average fare). There are also other public transportation systems (Passenger Buses).

IMMUNIZATION: No specific vaccines are needed to travel to Spain as in all Europe.

PASSPORTS AND VISAS: A Valid Passport is required. Visas are not needed for US Citizens

DRESS CODES AND CLINICAL “ETIQUETTE”: Casual clothing is acceptable for the University environs. The hospital would require white coats.

OTHER PRACTICAL ISSUES:

Weather: In June weather is dry and temperature ranges from 20-30ºC

Cellular telephones: American cell phones can be used without problems in Spain.
