Thank you for your enquiry regarding the above training programme at the University of Central Lancashire.

The University currently offers a one-year training programme in Orthodontic Therapy which consists of an initial 2 week training block in July followed by a 3 week block training programme in September and 12 individual study days, which are based at the University. The remainder of your training will take place within your Orthodontic Practice or Department under the supervision and guidance of your Specialist Orthodontist.

The next course starts on 25th June 2018 and there are 15 places available.

The closing date for applications is 2nd May 2018, but the first interviews will likely be held in February 2018. We will consider applications after this date if any places are still available.

Trainee Orthodontic Therapists will be selected following an interview process, and a meeting with your Specialist Orthodontist (Clinical Mentor/Trainer).

There are 15 places available for the course, which starts in June 2018 and will be held at the University of Central Lancashire. The cost of the course will be £13,500. Please note that this does not include fees for the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) exams; please refer to their website for current information: http://www.rcsed.ac.uk/

Suitable candidates will be selected after interview with the Course Leader. The Clinical Mentors (Trainers) will be required to meet Course Representatives to discuss their responsibilities and mentoring expectations unless they have acted as Clinical Mentor previously.

As part of the selection process your Clinical Mentor will be expected to complete a self-assessment workplace questionnaire, which will be followed-up by a workplace visit to ensure that the training facilities within the Specialist Practice or equivalent are appropriate for clinical training.

1. Outline of Orthodontic Therapy Programme

The UCLan Orthodontic Therapy Programme is a one-year course designed to train Dental Care Professionals as Orthodontic Therapists. The introduction of the Dental Care Professional Register in 2006 now permits Dental Care Professionals to train as Orthodontic Therapists and treat orthodontic patients in the UK, under the supervision of an Orthodontist. The General Dental Council has stated that individuals can register and work as orthodontic therapists following completion of an approved course and by successfully obtaining a Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy. The UCLan Orthodontic Therapy Programme has been approved by the General Dental Council as an appropriate course for the training of Orthodontic Therapists.

Content and Course Format

The one year course comprises the following:-

1.  An initial two week training block commencing 25th June 2018, including the 2-day Mentor Training Event.

2.  A full time 3 week block of training at UCLan in September, followed by 12 study days over the year to be held at UCLan.

3.  Workplace training in an approved orthodontic practice or department, with the Specialist Orthodontist or Consultant Orthodontist acting as the workplace clinical Mentor / Trainer.

ZZ0031 Foundation Clinical Knowledge of Orthodontic Therapy Module Content

This module aims to enable the students to develop the underpinning knowledge of the clinical sciences and bio psychosocial issues relevant to evidenced based practice within Orthodontic Therapy. The module aims to develop the theoretical knowledge base required for safe, competent clinical practice exploring the concepts of health and well-being from a medical and bio psychosocial approach.
The syllabus content will be applied to encourage the acquisition of knowledge, understanding and skill development and will include:
• Biomedical Sciences and Oral Biology
- Oral Physiology
- Craniofacial, Oral and Dental anatomy
- Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry relevant to Orthodontic therapy

ZZ0032 Clinical Practice of Orthodontic Therapy Module Content

To enable the student apply and further develop clinical knowledge and skills within practice. To encourage and develop the student as a reflective, evidenced based, practitioner, actively involved in their continuing professional development and able to work safely within the scope of practice of a Orthodontic therapist.
The focus of this module will relate directly to the specific work practices of the student and all learning objectives will relate to both underpinning knowledge and the practical application of skills. The knowledge and skills required are mapped against the GDC Learning outcomes for Orthodontic therapists within “Preparing for Practice“ (GDC 2015). Content will include ethical, legal. public interest and accountability issues. A learning support package will be devised and agreed with Mentor in terms of formal and informal student support sessions. These support sessions may take the form of formal teaching sessions supported tutorials, directed study and/or clinical skill tutorials.
The syllabus content will be applied to encourage the acquisition of knowledge, understanding and skill development and will include:

This module aims to provide opportunities for students to explore, reflect on and evaluate their role as an Orthodontic therapist within their work organisation and current Public Health and Health Care policy.

The student will train under the close supervision of their Mentor. After successful completion of all modules of the course, including satisfactory workplace reports, end-of-module assessments and a project, the student can then apply to sit for the Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy examination awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (Dip. Orth. Ther. RCSEd).

The Course Leader is Dr Hemant Patel and the programme involves teaching from a variety of Consultants and Specialist Orthodontists. This will be delivered using a mixture of seminars and lectures which will cover the theoretical aspects of the Orthodontic Therapy curriculum. In addition, clinical training will include typodont exercises and sessions in the Postgraduate Dental Suite.

Cost The cost of the Course is £13,500 (plus Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) exam fees), and there are 15 places available. Please note that if offered a place on the course, a non-refundable deposit of £2,500 will be required.

2. The Course Leader Dr. Hemant Patel BDS, M.Orth, RCS(Edin), M Orth RCS(Eng) MRCP(Glas)

Hemant qualified as a dentist in 1991 from the University of Liverpool. After a period of vocational training in general dental practice and various hospital posts he commenced specialist training at the University of Manchester. He obtained his Certificate of Specialist Training and the Membership in Orthodontics from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. In February 2009 he was made a member of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Glasgow.

Hemant is registered as a Specialist Orthodontist with the General Dental Council. He is a member of the Specialist Practitioner Group of the British Orthodontic Society, and a Fellow of the World Federation of Orthodontists.

·  Clinical Mentor application form for completion by the Orthodontist who will be supporting the applicant.
·  Once completed please ensure the Trainee Orthodontic Therapists has a copy to attach to their online application.
Please complete these forms as soon as possible, The closing date for applications is 2nd May 2018. However, we will accept applications after this date if all places are still available.
Date to be confirmed following application / Applicants and their Clinical Mentors will be invited to UCLan.

4. Responsibilities of the Student (Trainee) Orthodontic Therapist

The following is a list of obligations of the Student (Trainee) Orthodontic Therapist. The Clinical Mentor will need to ensure that the student fulfils all these obligations:

1.  Attend the practice or hospital department for the agreed hours and perform such clinical duties as appropriate for patient care and personal learning needs

2.  Determine personal learning needs in discussion with the trainer

3.  Maintain and keep up-to-date their written and electronic log of clinical activity and be prepared to submit it for inspection when requested

4.  Take an active part both in weekly tutorials with the trainer and periodic progress review

5.  Attend all of the core course and all study days organised during the training period; normally the only reason for not attending a study day will be sickness [prior written approval from the course leader must be obtained for absence from the core course and study days other than sickness]

6.  Ensure that holidays do not lead to absence from the study days

7.  Adhere to all the course rules and regulations
