Explanatory notes

1Definitions

Short period maintenance includes lubrication and replacement of key tufting components, and is usually carried out when changing the configuration of the tufting machine.

Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing activities including health and safety, operational, environmental and quality management requirements. They refer to manuals, manufacturer's specification, codes of practice, or policy statements.

2Performance of the elements must comply with Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

Outcome 1

Prepare for short period maintenance of a carpet tufting machine.

Evidence requirements

1.1The importance of the settings of key components of a tufting machine is explained.

Rangebed height adjustment, jerker bar position, timing and stroke of needle bar, cam.

1.2The factors that influence the selection of key tufting components are described.

1.3Key tufting components are checked for alignment and wear and any modifications needed are specified in accordance with workplace procedures.

1.4Machine parts, consumables and tools required for maintenance are specified.

1.5Appropriate staff are notified of the impending maintenance of the machine in accordance with workplace procedures.

Outcome 2

Carry out maintenance on the machine.

2.1Maintenance of tufting components is completed in accordance with maintenance schedules and workplace procedures.

Rangecheck, adjust, replace.

2.2Machine adjustments are completed in accordance with machine operating manual.

Rangestitch rate, pile height.

2.3The machine is operated in accordance with workplace procedures to verify it is running correctly.

2.4Maintenance records for the machine are updated in accordance with workplace procedures.

Outcome 3

Change the configuration of a tufting machine.

Evidence requirements

3.1Appropriate staff are notified of the impending servicing of the machine in accordance with workplace procedures.

3.2Changes to the configuration are completed in accordance with workplace procedures.

3.3Changes to machine configuration are confirmed in accordance with workplace procedures.

3.4Updating of machinery status record are completed in accordance with workplace procedures.
