The Highland Street AmeriCorps Ambassadors of Mentoring is an AmeriCorps Program where members serve in mentoring programs across Massachusetts.
Organizational Description:
Mass Mentoring Partnership (MMP) is fueling the movement to expand empowering youth-adult relationships to meet the needs of communities across Massachusetts. We work with mentoring programs and youth development organizations to assess programmatic needs and organizational capacity to provide customized strategies that strengthen youth, families, and communities.
Mass Mentoring Partnership’s AmeriCorps program, the Highland Street Corps Ambassadors of Mentoring, is currently recruiting a part-time ambassador for the 2015-2016 program year, which began on August 3, 2015 and runs through June 30, 2016. This AmeriCorps Ambassadors would complete 6 months of service at a host organization in Massachusetts. One Ambassador is placed at Ascentria Care Alliance in the Unaccompanied Refugee Minor Program in Worcester, MA.

The Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Program (URM) is a program of Ascentria Community Services, a subsidiary of Ascentria Care Alliance. URM is the only foster care program in New England that assists refugee and migrating youth exclusively. The program is responsible for refugee, asylee and trafficked young people under age 18, when entering the United States with no parent or guardian. URM places the minors in foster care and other appropriate settings with specially trained families and staff, and provides culturally and linguistically appropriate support.
Essential Functions of the Position (required):
- Be able to complete a minimum of 850 hours of documented service to successfully complete host site project
- Complete all required AmeriCorps documentation and monthly reporting
- Complete at least 1 collaborative community service projects to benefit the field of mentoring outside the host site
- Maintain a service portfolio and blog posts
- Must be able to commute to all corps-wide trainings and events to cultivate future non-profit leaders. Responsibilities include attending a three hour pre-orientation session in August, one week-long MMP orientation, monthly corps meetings, a mid-year retreat and two week-long community service planning sessions – Meetings located in Boston, MA
- Must be able to effectively manage time and meet competing demands
- Complete all professional development requirements as part of member service agreement
- Strong understanding and support of the Ascentria mission statement, as well as an understanding of individuals served, staff roles, and constituents from diverse backgrounds.
- Commitment to building positive community support and ability to exercise considerable diplomacy in managing various constituencies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including interpersonal communication, group leadership skills, public speaking and clinical and persuasive writing skills
- Strong organizational skills with knowledge of financial, human resource, and marketing requirements
- Ability to provide leadership, to work effectively and flexibly in a team environment and to maintain a positive attitude
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to set priorities, and manage multiple tasks to deadline
- Computer skills including use of word processing and spreadsheet programs, database preferred
- Ability to handle conflict, stress, and think on one’s feet
- Ability to delegate responsibility effectively and to work with conflict in a positive and constructive manner.
- Ability to define expectations and communicate them effectively.
- Ability to problem solve, resolve, deliver
ADA Requirements
- Ability to sit, stand, climb stairs and move about the office
- Ability to use the telephone
- Ability to drive a car for up to 3 hours
- Ability to speak and make public oral presentations
- Ability to write and use a computer
Qualifications:
- BA/BS strongly preferred
- Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
- Experience with and/or commitment to youth development, nonprofit organizations and their development
- Comfortable with public speaking
- Strong writing and editing skills - some experience with blogging and social media preferred
- Excellent organization and communication skills
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Proven leadership and project management abilities
- A passion for national and community service
- The desire to work with diverse people, organizations and communities
- Flexibility, adaptability, and a good sense of humor
- Positive attitude
- You must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the U.S. to be an AmeriCorps member.
- Ability to travel with own car within region and to other Ascentria sites (mileage reimbursed)
- Ability to work weekends and evenings as needed
