Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
Procedures:
1.  Make a KWL chart to find out what students know.
2.  Shared Reading: big book of THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR:
a.  Day 1: Predictions and read for enjoyment.
b.  Day 2: Locate new and important words.
c.  Day 3: Masking words to cross check beginning sounds (what do we expect to see at the beginning of the words if it is EGG? Unmask the word and see if it looks right for EGG and sounds right and makes sense)
d.  Day 4: One-to-one (unmask various words)
e.  Day 5: Retell by days of the week and students can act it out.
3.  Make a Venn Diagram and compare THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR with a non-fiction book.
4.  Introduce students to the butterfly habitat.
a.  Make predictions in science journal about what we will expect to see as the caterpillar morphs into the butterfly.
b.  Every day students will record observations using picture of the butterfly habitat.
5.  Students will make the life cycle of a butterfly using one piece of construction paper (white bean for the egg, macaroni noodle for the caterpillar, shell noodle for the chrysalis, and a butterfly noodle to represent the butterfly).
6.  Read a Butterfly poem: look for words that have an ending (such as “ing” or rhyme) and write them on a chart. Manipulate the beginning sounds in the poem with various letters. When students have learned a poem, they will add it to their poetry notebook and illustrate it.
7.  Label parts of the butterfly and talk about the adaptations they need to survive.
8.  Book Square: Students will draw the stages of the butterfly under each flap and then use numerical order to label the flaps in which the life cycle of the butterfly takes place. The teacher will pre-make labels for each student to glue to the flap.
9.  Watch United Streaming video about butterflies.
10.  After watching the butterfly complete the life cycle in the classroom in an authentic habitat (teacher will take picture throughout the process), students and teacher will make a book of every stage of the life cycle.
11.  Teacher will have different pictures of butterflies located in various spots. Students will describe where the butterfly is located using different positional words.
12.  Students (in groups) will be able to follow oral directions to place the butterfly in various spots, using positional words.
13.  Math: Create patterns using different colored and sized butterflies.
14.  Math: Students will be able to measure various objects using pre-cut butterflies.
15.  Complete the KWL chart with “what we learned.”
