Course Description: This course includes the strategic role of production operations management and how it interfaces with other functions of the organizations; the role and functions of operations manager is discussed in detail and problems and issues faced by him will also be highlighted; proven principles of operations to solve related problems and issues will be illustrated.

Course Objectives:

Students are able to:

1. define the meaning of operations and explain how operations interface with other function of organizations

2. elaborate various emerging issues and problems in operations management for manufacturing and service organization

3. apply the methods, tools, and techniques often used in operations function

4. illustrate the usage of recent technology that directly influence operations management

Testing and Grading: Each student's grade will be determined by the number of points that he/she accumulated during the semester. There will be total 100 possible points derived from the following sources: mid-term, homework, tutorial, project and a final exam. The final exam will cover topics discussed after the previous test.

The overall grade will be computed as follows

Midterm exam (week 9) 30%

Final exam 30%

Project 40%

Total 100%


Project

Each student will select one real organization and will conduct a case study on the chosen organization by using all the concepts and theories learned in this course. Topics to be covered in the case study should include:

-  How operations affect the competitiveness of the company

-  The operation strategy of the company

-  The company’s quality management

-  The company’s product and/or services

-  The company’s process, Technology, and Capacity

-  The company’s Facilities

-  The company’s Inventory Management

Each student is required to consult various sources such as interviews with the managers / key people of the selected company, direct visit to the company, books, and internet to gain information regarding the issues discussed throughout the course.

The case study output should be between 15 to 25 pages in length.

Case study report (softcopy and hardcopy) should be submitted during around week 13
