Objective – I can explain the growth of microorganisms.

Fungi Lab Activities

Question

What are the requirements of yeast if they are to grow?

Phenomenon

  • Under the right conditions, yeast grow.

Crosscutting Concepts

  • Cause and effect. Events have causes, sometimes simple, sometimes multifaceted. A major activity of science is investigating and explaining causal relationships and the mechanisms by which they are mediated. Such mechanisms can then be tested across given contexts and used to predict and explain events in new contexts.

Gather: Obtain Information

Students will observe what happens when yeast is grown using different “foods.” Student’s will provide an explanation for why their yeast grew or didn’t grow.

Reason: Evaluate Information

Using their data, students should be able to explain the conditions for growth or the conditions when the yeast did not grow.

Communicate: Communicate Information

Students should write an explanation to the following question: What do microorganisms need to grow?Answers should include how cause & effect plays a role in microorganisms growth.

Assessment

Students should communicate that microorganisms have requirements for life.

What are the requirements of microorganisms if they are to grow?

Phenomenon

  • Under the right conditions, microorganisms grow.

Crosscutting Concepts

  • Cause and effect. Events have causes. A major activity of science is investigating and explaining the relationships that cause the effect and the ways by which they are resolved. Such methods can then be tested across given situations and used to predict and explain events in new situations.

Your group has access to the following supplies…

  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Brown sugar
  • Cleaning fluid
  • Clear plastic cups
/
  • Cold water
  • Hot water
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Room temperature water
  • Salt
/
  • Stirrers
  • Syrup
  • Vinegar
  • White sugar
  • Yeast

For our purposes, yeast will serve as our sample organisms. Like all organisms, it has a set of requirements to survive. You will be identifying some of these.

As a group, determine different ways you can test yeast growth using you materials. Record your procedures and bring them to Mr. Hill for approval. After they are approved conduct the experiment, record your observations and data (gather), determine what your data is telling you (reason), and come to a conclusion(communicate).

You will write a final report, explaing the three sections (gather, reason, communicate).
