SUBJECT: Job Description for ADULT SCHOOL CROSSING GUARD

  1. PURPOSE
  1. The purpose of this policy is to establish the job description for the job title of Adult School Crossing Guard.
  1. POLICY
  1. In order for the department to be effective and efficient in the delivery of law enforcement services to the community, it is necessary for each individual member of the department to understand their role. Departmental goals and objectives can be obtained only through the cooperative efforts of the individuals that comprise the organization. It is the policy of this department that each member of the department has a clear understanding of their duties and responsibilities relating to their individual role within the department.
  1. PROCEDURE
  1. Essential Functions:
  1. Provide safe crossing of school children and other pedestrians;
  1. Keep traffic flowing without long delays during school hours;
  1. Maintain an understanding of basic traffic laws;
  1. Learn, display and maintain all skills, knowledge and abilities for the performance of all duties and responsibilities, as established by the Chief of Police;
  1. Act quickly, calmly and decisively in certain situations involving the safety of others; and
  2. Aid in reporting of any emergencies or vehicle code violations during school hours.
  1. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time;
  1. Ability to interact with children and adults;
  1. Ability to exercise mature judgment;
  1. Ability to express oneself clearly and precisely with physical and verbal direction;
  1. Ability to utilize both arms and hands to present discernible physical traffic signals employing a department issued hand-held stop sign, and wearing an authorized traffic safety vest;
  1. Ability to remain alert and attentive at a post;
  1. Ability toact quickly, calmly and decisively in certain situations involving the safety of others;
  1. Ability to follow written and oral instructions effectively;
  1. Ability to work independently or as a team;
  1. Ability to learn controls quickly;
  1. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the proper control of safe crossing for school children in regards to apparent vehicular traffic;
  1. Ability to learn, display and maintain all skills, knowledge and abilities for the performance of all duties and responsibilities, as established by the Chief of Police; and
  1. Ability to perform all duties and responsibilities during inclement weather and various lighting conditions.
  1. Direct Supervisor:
  1. The direct supervisor of an Adult School Crossing Guard is the Patrol Sergeant.
  1. Establishment of Job Title or Position:
  1. The job title of Adult School Crossing Guard isa civilian position established by the Chief of Police.
  1. Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Standards are set by N.J.S.A. 40A: 9-154:
  1. Is a citizen and resident of this state;
  1. Is sound in body and of good health;
  1. Is of good moral character; and
  1. Has not been convicted of any criminal offense involving moral turpitude.
