FOREWORD

Students,

Welcome to the 2014-2015 school year. For the rest of your lives, you will reminisce about your experiences during high school. Whether you are a 7th grader, 8th grader, freshman, sophomore, junior or senior, I challenge you to have the best school year of your life.

How can you have a successful, productive and rewarding school year?

*Take Pride *Show Respect *Demonstrate Kindness *LEARN!

If you take pride in yourself as an individual, as a member of your family, and as a student at Cashion High School, you will be motivated to succeed as a scholar and an exemplary citizen. We have the highest expectations of our students because a Cashion High School WILDCAT is not ordinary; he/she is EXTRAORDINARY.

If you are consistently respectful to the students and adults in our school, you will experience few conflicts or obstacles to impede your progress. You will develop human relations skills which will be invaluable to you throughout life.

The English poet William Wordsworth said, “The best portion of a good life is the little nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and of love.” Being courteous, kind and tolerant toward others is an expectation of every member of our Cashion High School family.

Your job as a Cashion High School student is to LEARN. Our teachers have great knowledge to impart and wide experiences to share. They are a carefully selected group of outstanding educators who are dedicated to your learning and achieving. Take advantage of the serious learning environment at Cashion High School because you are building the foundation for your future. Learning can be a tough task, but always remember the exhilaration and pride you feel when you solve a complex problem, master a difficult concept, or suddenly comprehend what your teacher is explaining.

Finally, have a great time at Cashion High School this year. Whether you choose art, student government, agricultural sciences, computer applications, or any of a variety of school organizations, find an activity to which you can be an asset and can enjoy. Attend and represent Cashion well in the many activities sponsored by our district. Get to know our secretary, librarian, counselor, principal and all of our faculty and staff who are willing to help you. Have fun and, in the process, make a positive contribution to your school and your community.

Ryan Schenk, Principal

Parents,

Within the pages of this manual are many of the policies and procedures we feel are necessary to allow for a fair and consistent level of expectation for each of our students. We realize that every student and parent may not necessarily agree with every procedure in school; however, it is still very important to have your support. We revise our policies and procedures each year based on input from students, teachers, and parents. We rely largely on the input of teachers and students who spend a large majority of their time operating under these procedures. We also try to keep in mind those habits and practices that are most likely to contribute to the overall success of the many teenagers and adults coexisting in the same building for a school year. Therefore, your support and encouragement are both necessary and appreciated.

From time to time, you may have a question for your child’s teacher or coach. We encourage you to use the following procedure as a framework to address such concerns: first, contact your child’s teacher/coach via phone or email; second, schedule a conference with your child’s teacher/coach if you feel the matter is better handled in person than via phone or email; finally, contact me or our school counselor for other concerns. Following these procedures or the chain of command, if you will, tends to promote positive relationships between parents, faculty, and students. We certainly appreciate your efforts to use these common procedures.

Finally, we hope that the high school experience for you and your child will both positive and memorable. There will be many opportunities to volunteer, or otherwise become involved, with Cashion High School and your child. Although your child a developed more independence since leaving elementary school, you are welcomed and encouraged to visit our campus and to become involved. As a parent, you have the difficult task of fostering independence in your child while still maintaining a high degree of involvement in your child’s education. Therefore, we welcome and appreciate your talents, resources, and input that may benefit our school, our students, and our tradition as a whole.

It truly does take the effort and support of the whole to help realize the potential of each individual. We thank you for your support and effort as we work to make this school year one of success, accomplishment, and a lifetime of positive memories.

Ryan Schenk, Principal

ACTIVITY ELIGIBILITY STANDARDS

All student participants must be passing in all classes to be deemed eligible for the next week's activities. This includes athletics, band, FFA, 4-H, and any other extra-curricular activities. A student who is absent on the day of an activity is ineligible to participate. This rule will be enforced at CASHION JR.-SR. HIGH SCHOOL. Students must attend at least one-half day of school to be eligible to participate in a school activity that day or evening. (3 or more periods are considered to meet the allowable time frame). The only exception may be made when the principal has cleared the absence ahead of time and has deemed it necessary to miss.

Students who are involved in extra-curricular activities and are not passing all subjects enrolled in at the end of a week will be placed on probation for the next one week period. The failing grade will be a determined as if a teacher were giving the student the final grade for a particular class. If a student is still failing one or more classes at the end of their probationary one week period, they will be ineligible to participate during the next one week period. The ineligibility periods will begin on Monday and end on Sunday.

Students who become ineligible for academic credit because of absences, (10 days per semester), also become ineligible to participate in extra-curricular activities. Students may regain their eligibility through the petition process at any time during the semester. LOSS OF ELIGIBILITY, DUE TO ABSENCES, MAY BE APPEALED TO THE PRINCIPAL VIA THE APPEAL PROCESS.

Students need to take responsibility for monitoring their eligibility. When they are ineligible and knowingly participate in an extra-curricular activity, they will face disciplinary measures which may cause the student to be removed from future events or awards ceremonies honoring the student in the extra-curricular activity where the violation occurred. Students who are academically ineligible may not accompany a Cashion High School team on trips and may not be seated on the sidelines with the team during a school sponsored extra-curricular event.

ACTIVITY TRIPS

Activity trips are an extension of the school program and school day. All rules and standards of Cashion High School are applicable during activity trips. Behavior must be exemplary on all trips. It is important that you represent our school, your family, and most importantly, yourself, in a positive way! Students should make every effort to collect and complete assignments before leaving for an activity trip. In the event that this does not happen, students should check with their teacher the following day to make arrangements to complete all missing work.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT CLASSES

Advanced Placement Classes (AP) may be taken by students at Cashion Schools. For local GPA and Honors, these classes will be figured on a weighted 5.0 GPA Scale. For transcripts sent to higher education and other post-secondary schools, these GPA’s will be adjusted to meet the requirements of the institution to which they are being sent. Most institutions require that all transcript grades must be base done on an un-weighted 4.0 GPA Scale.

ALCOHOL/DRUG ABUSE

Students are prohibited from engaging in the following conduct or activities:

·  Smoking, using, and/or possessing tobacco products and/or simulated tobacco products;

·  Using, consuming, possessing, or being under the influence of, selling, transferring, distributing, or bartering any alcoholic beverage or low-point beer as defined by state law;

·  Using, consuming, possessing or being under the influence of, selling, transferring, distributing, or bartering any narcotic drug, stimulant, barbiturate, depressant, hallucinogenic, opiate, inhalant, counterfeit drug, or any other controlled dangerous substance which is capable of being ingested, inhaled, or absorbed into the body and affecting the central nervous system, vision, hearing, or other sensory or motor function;

·  Using, possessing, selling, transferring, distributing, or bartering any drug paraphernalia.

“Presenting” a substance as an illegal or prohibited substance will also be considered a violation of this policy. Violation of the above policy is likely to result in disciplinary action, to include, but not limited to, out of school suspension and the involvement of law enforcement personnel.

ALL STATE/ALL STAR JACKETS

The district, from the activity fund, will provide a 100.00 dollar stipend toward the purchase of an All State and All Star jacket. The difference between the stipend and the total cost of the jacket is the responsibility of the student/parents. After the jacket is received and an invoice has been submitted to the school, a check for the stipend will be paid to the vendor.

Students may only qualify for the All Star jacket consideration, as stipulated above, when the opportunity does not exist for the student to earn the All State honor.

THE AMERICAN’S CREED

"I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic, a sovereign Nation of many sovereign States; a perfect union, one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes."
