Thank you! The City of Callaway residents are the best. We asked you to do something very difficult and you did it very quickly and efficiently. March 24th was a day that will go down in history for many reasons; the train/truck crash and derailment, the evacuation of the whole town and the LP semi tanker explosion. We are forever thankful to our Volunteer Fire Department, Police Department and all area fire departments and emergency responders for a successful outcome. No one was hurt or worse. Thanks again to everyone for their cooperation. We may be a small community, but we are strong!

Join the Callaway Fire Department

The Callaway Fire Department is currently accepting applications for paid-on-call volunteer firefighters. Callaway Fire responds to approximately 25 calls per year, covering the City and surrounding townships. Firefighters are paid for responding to fire calls, training/meeting attendance and are eligible for membership in the Callaway Fire Department Relief Association. Firefighters must be 18 years of age or older, possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. and hold a valid MN driver’s license. The selection process includes an oral interview, physical agility testing, and background check. Contact Chief Heinlein at 218-841-5782 or City Hall for an application.

CodeRED is a web based system which will allow us the ability to reach a large number of citizens in a very short period of time, by geographically based delivery of phone and text messaging. The system uses the latest in mass notification technology making the system very easy to use.

In addition, it allows County residents the ability to create their own account so they can add or remove numbers they want the system to call. The Public Works Department has been jetting the sanitary sewer pipes. During this process they have been finding large clumps of “wipes”. These products claim to be flushable, but they are not. These wipes build up in the pipes causing damage and blocking the flow of the sanitary sewer. Please DO NOT FLUSH “wipes” down the toilet, instead put them in the trash. THANK YOU

“Take it to the Box” MEDICATION DISPOSAL PROGRAM

WHAT: The Take It To The Box program promotes the safe use, safe storage and safe disposal of unneeded prescription and over-the-counter medications. Becker County is serious about preventing medication misuse/abuse and about healthy environmentally safe disposal of unneeded medications. WHY is it important? A growing concern is the abuse, by youth and others, of medications not prescribed to them. Safe disposal makes un-needed medicine less available. Evidence is increasing about the damage to the environment due to unsafe disposal of medications. Proper disposal helps protect our soil and water.

WHAT else should I know? The Box is available seven days a week, 24 hours a day at Becker County Sheriff’s Office at 925 Lake Ave, Detroit Lakes. No question asked, and is free of charge to residents.(no business waste please)

WHERE will the disposal box located? Drop off box is located in Becker County Sheriff’s Office at 925 Lake Ave, Detroit Lakes MN 56501

WHAT do I do? Come to Sheriff’s Department window, let them know that you have something to dispose of, they will unlock the door, and you can drop medication into the disposal box.

• NO syringes, needles or “sharps” or mercury accepted please.

For more information, contact: Becker County Sheriff’s Office at 218-847-2661 or Becker County Environmental Services at 218-846-7310
