Re: Call for Faculty Panelists, CTE Podcast Series Panel Episode, Learning Transfer
Dear Faculty and Teaching Associates,
The Center for Teaching Excellence is developing a podcast series to provide a platform for focused, interdisciplinary round-table discussion about particular topics related to teaching. Each podcast will have a specific theme. The second podcast that we plan to record will fall under the theme “Learning Transfer” in the classroom.
What happens to what students learn in our classes after the semester ends? How do students adapt knowledge and skills gained in our classes to a wide variety of circumstances? What can we do to facilitate long-term learning? These questions surround the concept of “learning transfer,” which is defined as how students are able to adapt, use, and engage with prior knowledge in new educational, civic, professional, and personal contexts. Yet, over a century of research on this topic has demonstrated that learning transfer presents a “formidable challenge” to educators of all levels (McKeough, Lupart, and Marini, 2004).
This panel seeks panelists who will share discussion and practical strategies for how we might encourage students to draw upon prior knowledge, connect their learning to multiple settings, and take their learning with them when they leave our courses. We are especially interested in strategies that are appropriate for people teaching across the disciplines.
In addition to this Call for Panelists, we are open to hearing from you, especially if there is an idea you would like to see us cover on the podcast series in the future.
The CTE Podcast Series will be featured on a new section of the CTE website called The Faculty Café.
Ideally, the podcasts will be an opportunity for each of the panelists to share their own ideas, as well as also provide a space for cross-disciplinary discussions about a particular idea related to pedagogy. Because of this, we are specifically looking for panelists whose ideas can easily be adapted into other disciplines. The CTE Podcast Series is all about sharing great ideas and thinking across disciplines in order to enhance the practice of teaching and benefit the entire IUP teaching community.
Anyone currently teaching at IUP (includes all faculty - permanent, temporary, part-time, and teaching associates) is welcome to submit a proposal.
Proposals for presenting should provide no more than 250 words about your interdisciplinary idea for innovative uses of technology in the classroom, and why your innovation is unique and transferable. The estimated time to record the podcast is expected to run approximately one-hour, but depending on the topic and number of panelists, it might be somewhat shorter or longer.
Using the attached form, please submit your proposal to both Brandon Galm () AND Marie Webb (). This call will remain open until further notice. Please submit a proposal anytime.
