Who we’re looking for:

Children in Crisis is seeking an experienced Programme Funding Manager to lead the development and writing of high quality concepts, proposals and budgets to institutional donors so as to secure significant income growth from institutional funds and the continuity of Children in Crisis’ multi-year programmes. The successful candidate will be adept in writing compelling bids to a range of institutions.

Children in Crisis has 21 years’ experience working across some of the world's most challenging, hard to reach and fragile contexts. We have pioneered a range of innovative and sustainable approaches to education, child protection and partnership working – and we are recognised as being at the forefront of supporting the most vulnerable children in our partner countries. Currently, programme activities are taking place in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan and Burundi.

The post requires someone who is fully aligned to Children in Crisis’ commitment to ensure communities and children are at the centre of their own development; who is ambitious to improve the lives of vulnerable children; who is driven by the contribution they, as postholder, will make to realising this ambition; and who is motived by working for a small, dynamicorganisation that does what it says on the tin.

Role:

This is a newly created post that offers the postholder a great opportunity to grow and diversify Children in Crisis’institutional funding and thus, the organisation’s inspiring, transformative work with vulnerable children and local communities across countries in Africa and Asia.

Children in Crisis already has a good track record of funding with institutions including Comic Relief and DFID (GPAF, UK Aid Match), but now requires a confident and competent fundraiser to work closely with colleagues from the Programme/Fundraising teams to grow our institutional fundraising portfolio.Sitting within the Programmes department, the post would be ideally suited to an experienced fundraising professional with a strong background and passion for international development. The postholder should relish the opportunity to travel to the countries Children in Crisis operate to develop prospects for bi-lateral funding and to gather and assimilate the required information for strong, compelling bids. The post holder’s main function will be to lead the successful expansion and diversification of Children in Crisis’ institutional grants, as well as support the capability of Children in Crisis in-country staff and partners to improve their institutional fundraising effortsin applying for and managing grants. They will be a key member of the team, working closely across the Programme and Fundraising departments.

Job Description

Key responsibilities will include:

Development of Institutional Programme Funding:

  • Lead the development and successful implementation of an institutional fundraising strategy, with a clear focus on diversifying and expanding Children in Crisis’ institutional grants portfolio.
  • Assessment of Children in Crisis’ existing and historic institutional Donors, and research and mapping of current Donor strategies and trends, to inform the development of the aforementioned institutional fundraising strategy.
  • Set annualtargets and work plans to accompany the institutional fundraising strategy in agreement with the Director of Programmes.
  • Work closely withProgramme Managersto develop a detailed understanding of programmes, the country strategies of each, programme funding priorities and projects in pipeline,so as to be able to respond proactivelyto calls and opportunities that arise.
  • Manage the development and writing of high quality bespoke concepts, proposals and budgets for institutional donors,in line with programme priorities and in close consultation with the Senior Project Funding Manager headingthe Trusts, Foundations and Corporate team, so as to ensure matched funding requirements are realistic and achievable.
  • Keep fully abreast ofinstitutional Donor strategies, calls for proposals, and of new opportunities as they arise, and ensure the Director of Programmes and colleagues across departments are kept fully informed of new developments / opportunities.

Capacity building of in-country teams and partners:

  • In line with Children in Crisis’ strategic objective to build the fundraising capacity of in-country teams and partner organisations, develop and deliver training, support and advice in proposal writing, applying for and managing in-country grants from institutional donors.
  • Undertake prospecting of in-country funding streams and support in-country teams and partner organisations to respond, as appropriate, to calls that arise.

Grant management, Donor relationships and reporting:

  • As custodian of communications with the institutional Donors/Fund Managers, manage and maintain strong, positive communications, ensuring timely, quality reporting to Donors and rigorous grant compliance.
  • Develop and agree with the Director of Programmes and respective Programme Managers the schedule for reporting to Donors, including tasks to be assigned to individuals, and lead the process of reporting to Donors.
  • Keep Programme Managers and partners regularly informed of any changes in Donor reporting requirements and specific conditions of grant.
  • Keep Donors informed of in-country developments that may affect programme delivery between reporting requirements as deemed appropriateand necessary.

Finance and data management:

  • Meet quarterly with the Director of Programmes and Director of Finance to track institutional income and expenditure against targets.
  • Undertake 6-monthly review of the institutional fundraising strategy with the Director of Programmes.
  • Maintain an up-to-date data base on institutional grant applications – those researched, made, pending, prospective and pipeline.

Representation and networking:

  • Work proactively to develop strong Donor and NGO networks at HQ and country level that lead to new opportunities for institutional funding and collaboration with others.
  • Participate in key working groups, including BOND’s EC Funding and Institutional Funding working groups.

Other:

  • The Programme Funding Manager may also be required to support the Director of Programmes with the development of new country programmes, as determined by Children in Crisis’ strategic objectives.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience,and applicable training in fundraising, e.g. proposal development, donor relations.
  • Proven track record, backed by at least 3-years working experience, in writing successful high value funding proposals and project budgets for UK and international institutional donors (e.g. EU, US based, UNICEF and other multilaterals)
  • Excellent, up to date knowledge of current UK and international funding trends and sources
  • Highly accurate with strong attention to detail when gathering and presenting compelling narrative and verbal information on programmes.
  • An excellent communicator and networker; highly engaging, motivated and proactive in pursuing opportunities for institutional funding
  • Demonstrated ability tosuccessfully manage grants and maintain positive relationships with institutional Donors
  • Team player, able to work in a small, dynamic organisation with limited resources
  • Able to travel annually to country programmes up to three times a year
  • Strong affinity to the vision and mission of Children in Crisis

Desirable:

  • Graduate qualification, preferably in the area of international development
  • Experience of working in education,child protection, and/or livelihoods in conflict or post conflict environments
  • Experience of successfully securing and managing EU funding
  • Experience of working with local partners to develop their technical skills and abilities to seek and secure in-country grants
  • Evidence of on-going professional development to improve skills and knowledge of institutional fundraising.

Child Protection and Vulnerable Adults Policy:

As a child-focused agency, Children in Crisis recognise the need to ensure that child protection awareness and strategies are developed and active in its UK and overseas programmes. To this end, CiC will require all successful candidates to sign its child protection and vulnerable adults policy and code of conduct and, where relevant, to agree to a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check.

Terms and conditions:

Preferred start date: January 2015 (negotiable for the right candidate)

Salary:£30,000 - £35,000 (depending on experience).

Permit requirement:Must be eligible to work in the UK

Pension:Children in Crisis operate a contributory pension scheme

Leave:25 days per year, increasing to 30 days after three years of employment

Working hours:35 hour week
