STORY:
NFL quarterback Reggie Bush admits when it comes to coaching he doesn’t know it all. Tennis star Andy Murray says a coach is important but you can do a lot yourself and FIFA World Cup™ winner David Villa believes without coaching he would not be the player he is today. Just three of the top sporting names that have come together for the launch of the new adidas miCoach personal training app. for smart phones. Rugby’s Jonny Wilkinson, World indoor Pentathlon winner Jessica Ennis and Olympic cycling Champion Victoria Pendleton also added their names to the growing list of athletes improving their performances with help from miCoach.
Operating on mobile phone GPS coordinates the miCoach application tracks your run, it coaches you in real-time during your training session, based on pace and other information entered at setup. miCoach offers what no other training device can: a personalised system that responds to your performance during training, in real-time, with audible coaching advice. The miCoach mobile app has different training plans to suit a range of different sports, including running, basketball, football, tennis and American Football.
Quarterback for the New Orleans Saints Reggie Bush says when it comes to coaching, he doesn’t know it all. “My coach’s advice is really important to me, I was always trying to listen with open ears and keep an open mind, and not take on the mentality that I know everything. You. can never know too much and there’s always room for improvement and always room for learning.” Bush, a 2010 Superbowl winner, loves the portability of the new adidas miCoach personal training application. “I would say the miCoach helps me because I can put together a workout schedule right there on my phone, its easy, and its very accessible.”
Andy Murray who was defeated at the semi-final stage of Wimbledon this year by the eventual winner world number one Rafael Nadal admitted, “When I was younger I didn’t really have any input, it’s just your coach, because you need to be told exactly what to do, how much to train, when to train, when to warm up, so it’s a little bit different now.”
The new adidas smart phone application is available to download from the 2nd of August at selected app stores including iTunes and Blackberry App World. The system verbally coaches, “speed up to green zone,” or “slow down to blue zone” to ensure that you stay within your targeted heart rate zone and keep running at the right personal level based on the device Heart Rate Monitor and Stride Sensor.
England Rugby ace Jonny Wilkinson who has tested the new technology thinks it helps with his pre-season work out, which is massively important. “If you do it then, before the season starts you can up your base level, because during the season, it tends to be more about maintaining rather than actually building and moving forward.”
The miCoach app syncs automatically with the website micoach.com offering six different sport training plans and the option to create personalised conditioning programs. The training programmes are tailored to the personal fitness level and goals allowing to monitor, manage and analyse progress over time.

Andy Murray Yeah its pretty painful
Jonny Wilkinson but I don’t think it possible to push yourself to the extreme unless you’ve got someone there helping you, and that’s what this kind of is you know, it’s the balance between that and someone helping you without actually needing someone to be right there on your shoulder.
Victoria Pendleton I spend 24/7 with my coach because I am my coach
David Villa (Spanish) It’s a good device to help train yourself. It’s important to keep thinking that you can always be better.
Reggie Bush Its almost like having a little coach right there on your phone…that’s what it is really about is having a coach right there anytime you need it to help you stay motivated or just to help you do whatever.

INTERVIEW: Andy Murray UK / ATP Current #4 ATP Ranking
Were you easy to coach when you were young?
Once you get to a certain age you start to know how you like to train, the sort of stuff that you like to do, and before I started working with the guys I’m working with now we kind of sat down and I told them the stuff I like doing, the stuff I didn’t like doing, and the stuff that I wanted from them and then they obviously, so now its, whereas before, when I was younger I didn’t really, you don’t really have any input, it’s just your coach, because you need to be told exactly what to do, how much to train, when to train, when to warm up, you know, all that sort of stuff, so it’s a little bit different now.
What is your training schedule?
I probably spend 2 hours a day on the court, 2 hours in the gym and then you know, on top of that, I do a lot of things in terms of, I have to see the physio most days to make sure you know, I’ve got no sort of, aches and pains, and make sure I’m eating at the right times so that, and the right things so that I can train properly so, I mean, although its kind of really 4 hours of exercise, there’s a lot of other things you kind of spend probably about 10 until 5, on most days your kind of on the go.
INTERVIEW: David Villa Spain Euro 2008 Winner & FIFA World Cup 2010 Winner
What is the hardest drill you have ever done?
The most difficult is between seasons, when you are not competing for a while. Exercises are very physical and difficult to go through. After that you do feel better.
What did you learn from your coaches when you were younger?
Respect, I know my coaches help me become a footballer. They are a big part of the education. I respect them and try to learn from them.
How do you think the miCoach app. Could help kids?
It’s a good device to help train yourself. It’s important to keep thinking that you can always be better. Like I said to you before, it’s especially important when you are a child. You have a lot to learn. All these facilities and support are important for the athletic development.
INTERVIEW: Jessica Ennis UK / 2010 World Indoor Championships Gold (Pentathlon)
Do you think preparation is important?
We have a winter period of training which is normally October through till the beginning of January and that’s the most important part of training, that’s all the pre-season stuff where you, you know really lay your foundation for the outdoor season, so I think it’s really important you have to do the training, you have to put the work in otherwise you won’t do well at the time that you want to.
What is the hardest drill you have to do in training?
The hardest session my coach sets me is probably an 800 metre related session, so its normally quite a lot of running, really short recoveries, and obviously you get a lot of lactic acid in your muscles and very tiring, so there the ones that are the difficult sessions in the week.
INTERVIEW: Jonny Wilkinson UK / Toulon & World Cup Champion, 2003
Is pre-season training important?
Yeah, massive, I think pre-season is the best time to get all your big improvements in. if you do it then, before the season starts you can up your base level, because during the season, it tends to be more about maintaining rather than actually building and moving forward, so pre-season is massive, when your injury free, no niggles, good time off, you can plan everything, it’s a massive opportunity to really prepare for something massive.
How does the miCoach benefit your training?
it would be great if you could train n your own and hit those kind of limits but I don’t think it possible to push yourself to the extreme unless you’ve got someone there helping you, and that’s what this kind of is you know, it’s the balance between that and someone helping you without actually needing someone to be right there on your shoulder.
INTERVIEW: Reggie Bush United States / New Orleans Saints - 2010 Superbowl Winner
How important is the coach’s advice to you?
My coaches advice is really important to me, I was always try to listen with open ears and keep an open mind, and not take on the mentality that I know everything, because I always feel like, you know, you can never know too much and there’s always room for improvement and always room for learning.
What is the hardest drill you have ever done?
My hardest workouts to me were when I was in college, when I was at USC, you know, the workouts that we did were really intense and, you know, we were always competing against each other, and always pushing each other and striving to just, you know, get better and better and those were some of the hardest workouts I ever had. But then they always revolved around the core, the abs, and those are the things that everybody doesn’t want to do, those are the things that hurt a lot though so, I would say it revolved around, you know just working out my core muscles.
How does miCoach benefit your training?
I would say the mi Coach helps me because I can put together a workout schedule right there on my phone, its easy, and its very accessible, and, on the top of that you have it right there in front of you anytime you need it, you know, you can go to it
INTERVIEW: Victoria Pendleton UK / Track Cycling - Olympic Gold: Women’s Individual (Beijing 2008)
What is your average weekly training schedule?
My average weekly training schedule would be 3 sessions in the gym on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I’m on the track 4 times a week from 2 till 5, in the afternoon that’s Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and the rest of the time on the road, so its about 24 hours training in total.
Were you easy to coach when you were young?
In the early days, I really enjoyed being told what to do, and it being quite regimented, it makes it easier to motivate yourself when someone is telling you specifically what you should do.
