Chapter 2 – Cultural Heritage and History

This chapter discusses the concepts of heritage – culture, ethnicity, religion, and socialization – acculturation, life trajectory, and cultural phenomena that affect health.

Begin with critical questions:

  1. Who am I?
  2. What is MY cultural, ethnic, and religious heritage?
  3. How and where was I socialized to the roles and rules of my family, community, and occupation?
  4. What images would I place here? (slides 2-3)

Learning Outcome 1.

Explain the factors that contribute to heritage consistency—culture, ethnicity, religion, and socialization.

Concepts for Lecture

  1. Heritage is the degree to which a person’s lifestyle reflects his or her traditional culture, such as African, American Indian, Asian, Hispanic, or European.
  2. Discuss – the connotations and denotations of culture, ethnicity, religion, socialization, acculturation, and assimilation. (slides 5 – 19)
  3. The values indicating heritage consistency exist on a continuum, and a person can possess value characteristics of both a consistent heritage (traditional) and an inconsistent heritage (acculturated).
  4. Discuss the characteristics of heritage consistency and give examples. (slides 20 – 25)
  5. The concept of heritage consistency includes a determination of one’s cultural, ethnic, and religious background.

Explain acculturation themes.

Concepts for Lecture

1.Focus again on acculturation and assimilation and how they may conflict with heritage consistency.

2. Define and discuss each of the 4 types of acculturation. (Slides 18 and 19 – review)

Determine and discuss sociocultural events that may influence the life trajectory of a given person.

Concepts for Lecture

1. Analyze ethno-cultural life trajectories and the impact that historical events have on a given person’s life.

2. Discuss the difference in the generation of a given person and the role this may play in intergenerational conflict. (Slides 26-34)

Explain the factors involved in the cultural phenomena affecting health.

Concepts for Lecture

  1. Describe the 6 phenomena that vary among cultural groups and how they may impact on health.(Slides 35-44)

Suggestions for Classroom Activities

1. Pair off members of the class and instruct them to conduct the Heritage Consistency interview on each other. The Heritage assessment tool is found in Appendix E in Cultural Diversity in Health and Illness, 8th Edition.

2. Discuss the different growing up experiences with the class.
