13.1 Objectives – Light and Colors
Sections 27.4, 27.5, 27.7, 28.1, 28.2, 28.3, 28.4, 28.5, 28.6, 28.7, 28.8, 28.9, 28.10
o Know that white light is a combination of various frequencies of light.
o Know that the color of an opaque object is the wavelengths that are reflected.
o Know that the color of a transparent object is the wavelengths that are transmitted.
o Know that the primary colors of light - red, green, and blue - can be combined to produce light of every light in the visible light spectrum. Know that red + green ' yellow, green + blue ' cyan, red + blue ' magenta, red + green + blue ' white.
o Know that complementary colors are colors that, when mixed, result in white light. Red and cyan are complementary, green and magenta are complementary, and blue and yellow are complementary.
o Explain why the sky is blue due to scattering of light.
13.2 Objectives – Reflection and Refraction
Chapter 29
o Explain the Law of Reflection.
o Draw real and virtual light rays of an image.
o Describe the image of an object from a convex or concave mirror. Sketch the ray diagram.
o Use the mirror equation ( ) and magnification (M = – = )to describe an image.
o Define and use the index of refraction of a material (n = ).
o Use Snell’s Law (n1 sin q1 = n2 sin q2) to determine the angle of refraction.
o Find the critical angle at a boundary between two materials. Describe total internal reflection.
13.3 Objectives – Lenses
Chapter 30
o Describe converging and diverging lenses. Know that light bends through a lens because of refraction.
o Describe the image of an object from a convex or concave mirror. Sketch the ray diagram.
o Use the mirror equation () and magnification (M = – = )to describe an image.
o Define and use the index of refraction of a material (n = ).
o Describe applications of lenses (simple camera, eye, telescope, microscope).
