THE BELFAST EDUCATION AND LIBRARY BOARD
The Belfast Education and Library Board under the provisions of the Education and Libraries (Northern Ireland) Orders, is responsible for providing an education and library service, including a youth service, in the Belfast area. The provision of public library services transferred to Libraries NI on 1 April 2009. The area has a population of approximately 268,000. The number of pupils in attendance at school in the board’s area is approximately 57,000.
Register for occasional posts. The BELB has no mutuality of obligation to staff on the register. This means the BELB has no obligation to offer you work and similarly in the event of you being offered work, you have the right to refuse it.

POST: Youth Support Worker

REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must at the closing date hold a relevant qualification, see sheet attached. Applicants must also at the closing date hold Introduction to Youth Work OCN level 2 and Programme Development OCN level 3 or equivalent or a higher relevant examination qualification.
Preference may be given to those applicants who at the closing date have experience of delivering youth work and/or hold a PCV driving licence (category D1) to drive a minibus.
The panel reserves the right to enhance these criteria.

Posts involving work in educational institutions are subject to the provisions of the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (NI) Order 2007. The successful applicant will require an enhanced disclosure check which at present costs £30. Further details regarding the payment of this check will be issued with the contract of employment.
An ‘Open Evening’ for potential applicants will be held at Delamont Outdoor Education Centre, Killyleagh, County Down on Monday 12 November 2012 between 6.30pm and 8.30pm.

Job Description: Youth Support Worker
Responsible to: Worker-in-Charge
Responsible for: The delivery of key aspects of the unit programme, the management of appropriate staff/volunteers and the Implementation of ELB/organisational policies.
Job purpose: To work directly with young people to develop their social education by providing programmes of activities. This post is for staff appointed to undertake key duties, under the direction of a Senior Youth Worker/Area Youth Worker.
Main duties and responsibilities
1. To work directly with young people to develop their social education by providing programmes of activities, related to the ‘Model for Effective Practice’.
2. Ensuring that young people play an active role in the youth group and work towards a model of youth participation.
3. Communicate effectively and develop a rapport with young people.
4. Assist in the development of relationships with the wider community and external agencies.
5. Assist young people to express and realise their goals.
6. Enable young people to work effectively in groups.
7. Challenge oppressive behaviour in young people.
8. Provide information and support to young people.
9. Encourage young people to broaden their horizons and be active citizens.
10. Support young people in evaluating youth work activities and the impact of youth work on their development.
11. Support young people in their understanding of risk and challenge and in taking action to address key issues in their lives.
12. Implement the ELB/Management Committee’s Child Protection Policy and work with young people to safeguard their welfare and the welfare of others.
13. Carry out administrative duties within the unit, under the direction of the Line Manager.
Other duties
1. To carry out such duties, as may be assigned by the Line Manager, within the level of the post.
