BIBLE DISCUSSION GROUP STUDY QUESTIONS
In preparation for Sunday, December 18, 2016 Passage: Psalm 110:1-7
Memory Passage: Psalm 110:1-4
DAY 1 – ASK FOR INSIGHT READ THE PASSAGE
(a) Read Psalm 110:1-7 & Mark 12:35-37. In Mark 12, when Jesus said, “How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David,” what was He implying that the scribes thought of the Messiah?
(b) According to Jesus, (1) who wrote Psalm 110:1, (2) under what authority did He speak, and (3) why is this important?
(c) According to Jesus, what is the status of the “my (i.e. David’s) Lord,” and why does this fact prove the scribes wrong?
(d) In Psalm 110:1, to whom does “Lord” (Heb. Yahweh) refer? To whom does “Lord” (Heb. Adoni) refer?
DAY 2 – ASK FOR INSIGHT READ THE PASSAGE
(a) Read Psalm 110:1-7. What do you learn about Yahweh’s plans from the two verses that contain His words (vs. 1 & 4b)?
(b) When did/does Jesus “sit at (Yahweh’s) right hand?”
(c) The Hebrew is a bit difficult in v. 3, resulting in various translations, but using your translation explain the extent and nature of the Kingship they describe.
(d) How does Jesus’ reign fulfill this description found in vs. 2-3?
DAY 3 – ASK FOR INSIGHT READ THE PASSAGE
(a) Read Gen. 14:17-20 & Heb. 7:1-10. Hebrews 7:1-10 is a brief commentary on the meaning of Genesis 14:17-20. What does Melchizedek’s name mean, what 2 offices does he hold (vs. 1-2), and why does this remind us of the promised Messiah (cf. Is. 9:6-7, Jer. 33:15-16, et. al.)?
(b) Notice Melchizedek has no genealogy in Genesis (something very rare!). Why is this important according to Heb. 7:3?
(c) How did Levi pay tithes through Abraham when he was not yet born (vs. 9-10), and what is the significance of this fact?
(d) Explain the main points to be grasped from Heb. 7:1-10 concerning Abraham and the priesthoods of Levi & Melchizedek.
DAY 4 – ASK FOR INSIGHT READ THE PASSAGE
(a) Read Hebrews 7:11-28. This section explains the theological significance of Melchizedek’s priesthood and comments on Psalm 110:4. What was the primary weakness of the Levitical priesthood (v. 11), and what law is changed (v. 12)?
(b) In what ways does Jesus arise “in the likeness of Melchizedek” (vs. 13-17)?
(c) Explain in detail the reasons Jesus is “the guarantor of a better covenant” (vs. 18-28).
DAY 5 – ASK FOR INSIGHT READ THE PASSAGE
(a) Read Psalm 110:1-7. Explain how the Messiah can be both King (vs. 1-3) and Priest (v. 4), even though He comes from the line of Judah rather than Levi.
(b) What battle is being depicted in vs. 5-6, and who is doing the fighting?
(c) Consider just a few more of the NT settings in which Psalm 110 is quoted and explain how the NT writers understood its meaning, importance, and application: Acts 2:33-35; Eph. 1:16-23; Col. 3:1-3; Heb. 1:1-3, 13; 8:1-2; 10:11-18; & 12:1-2.
(d) Write down ways in which the study of this Psalm has prompted you to (1) worship, (2) give thanks, (3) find encouragement, (4) live more courageously, and (5) find joy. If you have not experienced any of these during your study, meditate on each one asking God to show you ways in which these grand truths about Christ will strengthen your daily life in these and other ways (or go back to the beginning and do it all again J).
