Mr. Chris Hancock recounts the beginning of the Lady Dragon Soccer Team.

Probably the most recent girl’s sport added to NHS’s athletic’s program is girls’ soccer. According to Chris Hancock, the Father of a member on the first team,

I started working as a dad/coach in the Nacogdoches Youth Soccer Association in the early 90’s. My daughter, Jenny, was one of 2-3 girls who played on mostly boys teams. In 1995, there were enough 10 year-old girls playing that we started a couple of all girls teams and began to play in tournaments around East Texas. About the same time, the parents of some older girls, including Dr. Lyle and Pam Thorstenson, joined with my wife, Cindy, and me and others to start encouraging the NISD to start a girls soccer program at the high school. We met several times with more than one athletic director until the district agreed to start a program in the late 90’s. To this day, I’m convinced the district didn’t believe they would have to suffer us long because the numbers of girls wanting to play would be too low. That was not the case. Sharon Finley was the first NHS Girls Soccer Coach and coached through 1999.

Coincidental with the start of the high school program, a former SFA women’s soccer player, GariNolder, came aboard to coach our NYSA girls team and the girls began going to more and more tournaments and having success. The team travelled to tournaments in Panama Beach, FL and to Disney World to help bring attention to girls soccer. Some of the girls eventually joined club teams in the area and beyond. Jenny played for the Solar Soccer Club in Plano, Texas and competed in and won the 2001 U-16 Girls Division of the WAGS Tournament, the premier girls tournament held annually in Maryland. For the most part, however, the NYSA team stayed together until the girls graduated from high school in 2003. In 2000, when most of the girls from the NYSA team entered high school, Coach Finley stepped down and Coach Nolder was hired as coach at the high school. During that first season under Coach Nolder, 9 freshmen started or played major roles on the high school team. In the district opener, the Lady Dragons hosted a perennial playoff team in the Longview Lady Lobos, a team that had never lost to a Lady Dragon team. On that cold January night, the Lady Dragons scored two late goals to win the match and send a message to the rest of the district. That Lady Dragon team went to the playoffs, a first for the program, and the NHS girls soccer team would become a regular participant in post season play under Coach Nolder (her name became Gari Dial when she married early in her long tenure at NHS.)

Thanks to the persistence of these girls and their parents, girls soccer is yet another successful athletic opportunity for NHS girls to join.
