Minutes of Regular Meeting Board of Education September 24, 2007

Meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m.

Roll Call: Jennings, Jost, Peters, Reisner, Springer and Atwood. Olson was absent. Others present: Bryan Yenter, Middle School Principal; Larry Zeman, High School Principal; Cheryl Hakseth, 3rd grade Teacher; Tammy Lenbom, Business Manager; Al Brown, Superintendent; Jill Koenitzer, Elementary Principal; Tracey Meskers, 1st Grade Teacher; Chad Foss, 5th Grade Teacher; Linda Zeman, Special Education Director; Jennifer Schofield, 5th Grade Teacher; Nicole, Bryce, Speech and Language Pathologist; Amanda Ogren, Middle School Instrumental Teacher; Amy Weber, Middle School Guidance Counselor; Mike Lorenz, High School Science Teacher; Denise Michaelsen, High School Science Teacher; Jeff Moreland, High School English Teacher; Lee Killoren, High School Science Teacher; and Rachel Westberg, The Chetek Alert.

Motion by Springer, seconded by Jost to approve the agenda. Motion carried unanimously.

Linkage:

Jill Koenitzer discussed the Everyday Math Series that was adapted building wide at the elementary level. The Additional Training Proposal for teachers was presented. The only way to increase the speed of improving math results is to increase teacher familiarity and understanding of Everyday Math. Cheryl Hakseth gave an overview of Everyday Math from a classroom teacher’s perspective. She felt the training provided was very useful.

Tracey Meskers reported on the success of the First Day Celebration held at Roselawn. There was a 99% participation rate. The day is meant to calm any anxieties students, parents and teachers may have as well as being a positive start of the year. She introduced activities that may be added to next year’s Celebration.

Recognition:

The new staff members were introduced and a brief reception was held with refreshments. Meeting was recessed for new teacher reception.

Communication:

Board Development activities and dates were reviewed. Pam Rewey from WASB is retiring soon. The Board will put something together for her. Al Brown attended the State Superintendent’s conference where he talked with Bob Jauch. Mr. Jauch wants to set up a Barron County meeting with school boards. Mr. Brown also talked with Mary Hubler regarding the budget. A meeting for Safe Routes to Schools will be coming up.

Administrative Communication – Elementary: The scheduling has been revised to decrease the amount of time being lost to non-instructional activities. Every minute of the day is being used to the fullest. Middle School: MAPS testing is being done to identify strengths and weaknesses before the students take the WKCE tests. Some of the students and coaches will be attending the Heart of the North Sportsmanship Clinic in Hayward. High School: The discussions at Early Release were very productive and were aimed at doing what is best for the achievement of students. Denise Michaelsen was commended for her role as Student Council Advisor and organizing the activities during Homecoming Week. Special Education: Teachers have been very appreciative of the extra support the Special Education teachers have been giving the regular education teachers.

Information & Action:

Motion by Atwood, seconded by Jost that with regards to GP-2, Governing Style, the Chetek Board of Education concludes through self-assessment its performance during the previous reporting period has been in compliance. Motion carried unanimously.

Denise Michaelsen presented information on the vision for the K-12 Science Department and the promotion of science literacy. She reviewed the trends with the science test scores. The goals for the science department include: 1. increasing reading comprehension and graph interpretation skills 2. improve WKCE scores to be in the top five of the comparison schools 3. constant updates and improvements to the teaching of science. Challenges facing the science department are: 1. meeting the needs of diverse learners 2. lack of common teacher prep time in the high school 3. the science resources at the elementary are difficult to store and organize. Motion by Jost, seconded by Peters that with regards to the Science Monitoring Report the Board finds that the organization and the Superintendent are making reasonable progress toward achieving the desired results. Motion carried unanimously.

The meeting was recessed for the Annual Meeting and reconvened at 8:10 p.m.

Motion by Jost, seconded by Reisner to approve the Consent Agenda. Motion carried unanimously.

Motion by Atwood, seconded by Peters to adjourn. Motion carried unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
