Transition Initiatives for Stabilization (TIS) is a USAID-funded programme promoting peace and stabilization in Somalia. Implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) the TIS
Programme is facilitating over 200 quick-impact activities to promote confidence in government and increase social cohesion in Mogadishu and Somaliland.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
TIS-IOM is seeking an experienced Strategic Communications Specialist to be based in the Benadir Administration. The chosen candidate will:
- Monitor all Somali media daily and record all articles, radio and television clips relating to the Benadir Administration and district administrations;
- Support local governments by assisting with press releases and media liaison;
- Strategically and creatively design, budget, promote, implement and monitor community events with Government institutions;
- Mobilize targeted communities to participate in government events;
- Produce and update a variety of communication products, including posters, slideshows and brochures for the TIS programme and Government institutions;
- Design and implement behaviour change communication campaigns in accordance with government institutions;
- Guide government institutions on developing short documentaries that best showcases their work or promotes community successes and social cohesion;
- Assist with ad-hoc monitoring and evaluation tasks.
Required Qualifications, Skills and Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in communications and/or public relations or other related field;
- A minimum of four years progressive experience in journalism, event management or public information;
- Extensive experience in working with the media, event planning, promotion and management. Solid event management and media liaison skills;
- Acute attention to detail;
- Tailors language, tone, style and format to match cultural context and specific audiences;
- Ability to diplomatically handle sensitive situations with target audiences and cultivate productive relationships;
- Acts impartially and works equally with different communities and government officials;
- Listens to, represents and implements community-driven ideas;
- Proven experience in budgeting, design and implementing successful events;
- Excellent command in both written and spoken English and Somali is essential.
