Note to Parents Regarding Transportation:

Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired offers both residential and day camps during the summer.

For residential camps, parents will be responsible for transporting their child to and from the camp location

on the first and last day of camp.

For day camps, parents will need to transport their child

to and from the camp daily.

JUNE

CAMP ABILITIES

June 12-16 * Location: Iowa Braille School, Vinton - Residential Camp

Target Population: Students 7-13 years of age that are interested in sports, recreation, and leisure. Students should be predominately independent with self-care and have few behavioral concerns.

Whether you are running around a track, hitting a beeping ball, dancing, skating or catching a fish, come prepared to be active and involved in various sporting/leisure activities. Be prepared to amp up your fitness routine and make lots of friends. Individual, leisure, and team oriented activities will be the focus of this camp.

BIG CITY O & M CAMP

June 12-17 * Location: Martin Hall at Iowa State University – Residential Camp

Target Population: This camp is for students in grades 8-12 who use a cane to travel, are independent in their daily living skills, and want travel experience in a larger city.

Each full day of camp, students will have the opportunity to serve others through volunteer activities (i.e., serving meals through Food at First and making no-sew blankets for Project Linus). They will also practice cane travel skills in a larger city, bus travel skills with a cane, and practice independent daily living skills. After the independent living skills training is complete each evening, the students will have some fun with such things as playing goal ball, swimming, and even having fun on a climbing wall!

GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT

June 18-19 (Please Note: The date was originally published as June 24-25)

Location: Iowa Braille School, Vinton & Waterloo – Residential Camp

Target Population: Girls that are independent in basic self-help skills such as toileting and dressings.

Girls’ Night Out works on many independent living skills including; money handling and budgeting, safety skills, independent travel using a city bus and taxi, and social skills. Girls with visual impairments get an opportunity to spend time with each other, have fun, and make new friends. Girls who plan to attend both Girls’ Night Out and Yoga for the Body & Brain will have transportation provided from Waterloo to Iowa Braille School for the Yoga for the Body & Brain camp.

YOGA FOR THE BODY & BRAIN

June 19-23 * Location: Iowa Braille School, Vinton – Residential Camp

Target Population: Students in grades 3-12. Ability to follow directions and enthusiastically engage in activities. Students who enjoy an energetic lifestyle and demonstrate independent living skills. Students who are interested in body awareness, physical health, learning yoga, and breathing strategies to calm stress and anxiety.

Students will learn about the body/brain connection. Active yoga practice will be held at a minimum of twice daily to develop body/brain awareness. Research has found that exercise impacts learning. Classroom strategies will include learning how the parts of the brain impact mood and body function. Learning will occur throughout a variety of experiential activities, crafts, journaling, and social interaction to develop body awareness and discover the strength of the body and mind to achieve goals. Students will also participate in the preparation of nutritious snacks to fuel the body and mind.

EXPANDING OUR WORLD (YOUNGER STUDENTS)

June 20-24 * Location: Norwalk Middle School – Day Camp

Target Population: Kindergarten-6th grade. Students must have a recommendation from their TVI to participate. Program activities will require independent movement and functional skill levels within 2 grade levels of current placement.

Program will emphasize the Expanded Core Curriculum. Students will participate in activities to increase awareness and skills in meal planning and preparation, budgeting, grocery shopping, household cleaning, recreation and leisure choices, technology, social skills, self-determination, compensatory skills, and orientation and mobility. Organization of the camp will include block scheduling of activities in expanded core curriculum such that students can be grouped to work on specific aspects of tasks. Large group activities will be used to address socials skills, self-determination, and recreational and leisure. Daily field trips will be used to integrate all skills in a natural setting as well as provide additional exposure to new concepts.

PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES

June 26- July 1 * Location: Iowa Braille School, Vinton – Residential Camp

Target Population: Age 6-14. Students attending must be independent with the following: toileting, feeding, and dressing. They should also have basic orientation and mobility and age appropriate daily living sills. Students must be open to going out into the community to do activities and tolerate motion (doesn’t get motion sickness easily.)

This week-long camp will provide students with visual impairments an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with all things related to transportation and vehicles. During the camp, we will get up close and personal with real trains, automobiles, and an airplane! Other modes of transportation that may be explored could include a cable car, a trolley, a boat, a bus, a race car/stock car, a limo/corvette, a horse-drawn carriage, or a tractor/combine.

CAMP EXPLORE

June 26 – July 1 * Location: Camp Sunnyside, Des Moines – Residential Camp

Camp registration deadline is June 1. Please note that you will NOT be registered if you do not complete the Camp and Respite Application and Resident Camp registration forms found at www.easterseals.com/ia/camp by the June1 deadline.

Since there is no cost to you for your child to participate in this camp, please indicate on the financial portion of the registration form that Iowa Braille is the responsible financial party.

You are not registered for this camp by checking this camp on the Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (IESBVI) Camp Form.

Target Population: Students ages 6-20. Any age and ability. Must be eligible for Vision Services and on a current IEP (have not graduated with a diploma). This camp is offered by Easter Seals of Iowa. IESBVI staff collaborates with Camp Sunnyside staff to provide financial support as well as strategies of working with youth with blindness and visual impairments including children with significant impairments. Health services and overnight supervision is provided by Camp Sunnyside staff. In-service training for camp counselors to learn about adaptations for blind and visually impaired campers is provided by IESBVI staff prior to camp. IESBVI provides staff support during day and evening activities during the week of camp.

Camp Sunnyside offers a camp environment, with staff support, to practice Expanded Core Curriculum skills. Campers can increase Recreation, Leisure, and Social Interaction skills through exposure to a variety of campers, counselors, and cultures through participation in a variety of camp activities. Apply Orientation and Mobility skills with support in a natural outdoor unfamiliar environment. Practice Independent Living skills; specifically hygiene, dressing, and organization of belongings. Develop and demonstrate problem solving and self-determination skills. Have Fun!! Campers are a part of the residential camp at Camp Sunnyside and participate in scheduled activities with other camp participants. Structured program activities are planned by Sunnyside staff. Campers are supported during activities by adults responsible for 1-2 campers at a time, depending on student needs.

All campers MUST complete and turn in the 2016 Camp and Respite Application and Resident Camp registration forms through Easter Seals Iowa to participate in this camp.

JULY

ROBOTECH ACADEMY

July 10-14 * Location: Iowa Braille School, Vinton – Residential Camp

Target Population: Ages 14 and up. Basic independence, self-care, and age appropriate daily living skills.

This week-long academy will provide students with the opportunity to learn skills related to a variety of technology including both hardware and software. Students will use IOS devices, computers, and notetakers. They will have a chance to program robots to do a variety of tasks. Students will also learn skills such as troubleshooting technology and contacting tech support when needed. Lastly, they will use technology for recreational and leisure activities/games and making music.

A WALK IN THE WOODS

July 10-15 * Location: Iowa School for the Deaf, Council Bluffs – Residential Camp

Target Population: Students with visual impairments, currently on an IEP between 7 and 16 years of age. Students should be independent with toileting, feeding, and dressing.

Walk in the Woods is a Summer Camp that gives students the opportunity to explore the world in a multi-sensory way. There will be variety of field trips where campers get hands-on experiences with nature’s wide array of animal and plant life.
