The Sorrowful Mysteries

~ The Agony in the Garden ~

1 - Then Jesus went with them to Gethsemani. He began to grow sorrowful and to be sad.

2 - Then He saith to them: My soul is sorrowful even unto death: stay you here, and watch with Me. <Matthew 26:38>

3 - And when He was gone forward a little, He fell flat on the ground; and He prayed. <Mark 14:35>

4 - Father, if thou wilt, remove this chalice from Me: but yet not My will, but Thine be done.

5 - And there appeared to Him an angel from Heaven, strengthening Him. <Luke 22:43>

6 - And being in an agony, He prayed the more earnestly.

8 - And He cometh to His disciples, and findeth them asleep, and He saith to Peter: Could you not watch one hour with Me?

~ Jesus is scourged at the Pillar ~

1 - And binding Jesus, led him away, and delivered Him to Pilate. And Pilate asked Him: Art thou the King of the Judeans?

2 - Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. Pilate therefore said to Him: Art Thou a king then?

3 - For this was I born, and for this I came into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth My voice. <John 18:37>

4 - Pilate said to the chief priests and to the multitudes: I find no cause in this Man. I will chastise Him therefore, and release Him.

5 - Then therefore, Pilate took Jesus, and had Him scourged. <John 19:1>

6 - Surely He hath borne our infirmities and carried our sorrows: and we have thought Him as it were a leper, and as one struck by God and afflicted. <Isaias 53:4>

7 - But He was wounded for our iniquities, He was bruised for our sins. By His bruises we are healed.

8 - He was offered because it was His own will, and He opened not His mouth: He shall be led as a sheep to the slaughter. <Isaias 53:7>

9 - Let us examine Him by outrages

and tortures, that we may know His meekness and try His patience. <Wisdom 2:19>

10 - Let us condemn Him to a most shameful death: for there shall be respect had unto Him by his words. <Wisdom 2:20>

~ The crowning with thorns ~

1 - And the soldiers led him away into the court of the palace. And stripping Him, they put a scarlet cloak about Him.

2 - And platting a crown of thorns, they put it upon His head, and a reed in His right hand.

3 - And bowing the knee before Him, they mocked him, saying: Hail, King of the Judeans.

4 - And spitting upon Him, they took the reed, and struck His head.

5 - Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith to them: Behold, I bring Him forth unto you, that you may know that I find no cause in Him. <John 19:4>

6 - Jesus therefore came forth, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple garment. <John 19:5>

7 - And Pilate saith to them: Behold

the Man. But they cried out: Away with Him; away with him; crucify Him. <John 19:5, 15>

8 - Pilate saith to them: Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered: We have no king but Caesar. <John 19:15>

9 - Then therefore he delivered Him to them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led Him forth. <John 19:16>

10 - Christ shall be slain: and the people that shall deny Him shall not be His. <Daniel 9:26>

~ Jesus carries His Cross ~

1 - And He said to all: If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. <Luke 9:23>

2 - For whosoever will save his life, shall lose it; for he that shall lose his life for My sake, shall save it.

3 - And bearing His own cross, He went forth to that place which is called Calvary. <John 19:17>

4 - For though I should walk in the midst of the shadow of death, I will fear no evils, for Thou art with Me. Thy rod and Thy staff, they have comforted Me. <Psalm 22:4>

5 - Let us see then if His words be true, and let us prove what shall happen to Him, and we shall know what His end shall be.

6 - Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of Me. You shall find rest for your souls. For My yoke is sweet and My burden light.

7 - And there followed Him a great multitude of people, and of women, who bewailed and lamented Him. <Luke 23:27>

~ The crucifixion of Jesus ~

1 - And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, they crucified Him there.

2 - And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. But they, dividing His garments, cast lots.

3 - And there was also a superscription written over Him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew ... “This is the King of the Judeans”. <Luke 23:38>

4 - And the soldiers also mocked Him. Saying: “If Thou be the King of the Judeans, save Thyself.”

5 - Jesus therefore said to them: “When you shall have lifted up the Son of Man, then shall you know, that I am He”. <John 8:28>

6 - When Jesus therefore had seen

His Mother and the disciple, He saith: “Woman, behold thy son.”

8 - And it was almost the sixth hour; and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
