What are Carneddau Ponies?

There is evidence that ponies have roamed common land on the Carneddau range in Northern Snowdonia since the Bronze Age. The unique Carneddau pony has played an important role in shaping and maintaining the landscape and cultural heritage of the area.

Built to withstand the harshest of winters on poor quality grazing and standing at around 10.2 to 11.2 hands, Carneddau type Welsh Mountain Ponies are smaller in stature than other Welsh ponies, with a stockier physique.

The breed is extremely hardy and lives free on the mountain with the minimum of interference in a semi feral state. These ponies are tough, surviving life at high altitude where few others can. They are a traditional part of the farming system and are managed by farmers who have formed the Cymdeithas Merlod y Carneddau, many of whom can trace their families’ links with the breed back for 300 years.

A Versatile breed- what are they used for?

Conservation Grazing

Local grazing schemes are starting to use Carneddau ponies with great success for grazing land of wildlife value to maintain and enhance biodiversity across a range of habitats, from upland and fens to dunes and coastal heath. They will graze and trample bracken, gorse and scrub and eat young purple moor grass and rushes.

Carneddau ponies are particularly suitable for this role due to their hardiness and simple forage requirements. They are a vital resource for such schemes due to their grazing characteristics and ability to thrive on poor land. DON’T BUY A KONIK- BUY A CARNEDDAU!

Riding

Carneddau ponies have traditionally been used as children’s riding ponies with enormous success. Their height is suited to smaller riders but they are more robust than Section A Welsh Mountain Ponies, enabling them to carry a reasonable weight. Their trainable nature makes them an ideal riding and driving prospect.

Breeding

Carneddau ponies can improve bloodlines by adding both bone width and hardiness, resulting in a much more resilient riding pony.

A Rarity

There are fewer than 300 breeding mares on the Carneddau, although not registered as a rare breed; this strain of ponies is unique. Your support at this sale is vital to conserve them and is much appreciated. Thank you.

All ponies must be microchipped or Passported before leaving the sale. This will be carried out on the premises at a cost of £15 per pony, payable by the purchaser IN CASH at the sale office. Ponies cannot be released unless the paperwork showing the microchip barcode is presented to the loading attendant.
