Ernest Lee Perkins

OAKWOOD, Va. – Mr. Ernest Lee Perkins, age 60, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2005, in a Richlands hospital.
Born Sept. 20, 1944, in Russell County, Va., he was a son of Virginia Estelle Perkins of Oakwood and the late Rev. Edward Perkins. A lifelong resident of the area, he was a 1963 graduate of GardenHigh School and was a member of the GardenBaptistChurch. A disabled coal miner, he was a member of the UMWA. He enjoyed his time woodworking, vegetable gardening and farming.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Eugene Perkins.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of 40 years, Sharon Perkins of the home; one daughter, Leigh Perkins of Oakwood; and one son, Phillip Perkins and wife Diana of Franklinville, N.C. He was a loving grandfather to his three grandchildren, Ryan Perkins, Logan Perkins and Paytan Perkins; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene and Glen Dawson of Slate Creek, Va., and Sue and Mike Whitt and Faye and Bob Street, all of Oakwood; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim and Dorothy Perkins of Belfast, Va., and Sonny and Debbie Perkins of Oakwood; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the GardenBaptistChurch at Mavisdale, Va., with Rev. Steven Jody Breeding and Dr. Buddy Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Va. Pallbearers will be Daniel Perkins, Mike Perkins, Eugene Perkins, Jeff Lester, Brett Cordle and Jeff Street. Honorary pallbearers will be Eddie Fletcher, Mike Fletcher, Fred Sanders, Chuck Ratliff, Earl Baldwin, Bill VanDyke, Glen Dawson, Bob Street, Janie Fleming and Kate McClanahan. Honorary angels will be Edward "Poppy" Perkins and Eugene Perkins. Friends may call at the GardenBaptistChurch after 6 p.m. Thursday.
